I am following these instructions https://support.plex.tv/articles/201370363-move-an-install-to-another-system/ as I want to use a different computer for Plex. But I’m stuck at the part where it says to edit a library to update the content. My web app says there are no libraries to manage. I have followed the instructions twice but they still won’t show. I’m not sure where I have gone wrong. Both computers are windows 10.
Thank you for the help. I am not very technical, so I’m not sure about the paths. Where can I find out if they are the same? All my media is on a NAS device, they have not moved.
Please describe the steps you performed in detail so we can check if you missed a step somewhere. Sounds like PMS is not looking in the right directory for the old database file.
If the old database was damaged, it will also look like there are no libraries.
Make 100% sure that the source Plex server is not running when you copy the data folder.
I unchecked empty trash automatically, I logged out of the server and plex app, then closed them on the source computer. I then compressed the plex media server folder out of local app data, and exported the windows registry information. I copied this imformation to the destination computer and imported the registry, and uncompressed the server folder into the same places they were on the destination computer. I then rebooted the destination computer. I installed and logged into plex media server, and the web app. I signed out and in of the server. The instructions now say to edit the libraries so that they can find the information, but the libraries are not there. All I have is a message saying my library is empty. I have tried rebooting, logging in and out several times.
I will try to copy the data folder again, making sure everything is not running.
Are you using the same Windows user name on the new computer? The path where PMS looks is under the user folder. If you have a different username, that folder name will be different and PMS won’t see the right location.
If this is the case, edit the registry and change the path manually to match the correct path.
The computers have different names… whereabouts should I edit this in the registry, please? Is it this line HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\ which I exported from the source computer?
MovieFan.Plex I have looked in my user file, and I think I have doubled up. I put the copy of the plex media server folder into appdata/local as there was no plex folder. Afetr that I downloaded and installed plex, and I see that there is now a plex folder in appdata/local, and in that is a plex media server folder. Shall I move the data that I copied into that folder?
Yes. Looks like you restored to the wrong location. Just put your old files to match up with the new ones that PMS automatically generated.
As a quick test, exit PMS, find your database file in “plug-in support/databases” and just copy that over, restart PMS. Your libraries should show up but with all the posters missing. If that worked, shut down PMS again and finishing moving/copying the rest of the files.
The database is where all the info on your libraries is stored. If that didn’t work, copying the rest if it is just wasted until we can figure out why it’s not finding the database.
Can you get me your latest PMS logs? Can you also use the download database option to get the database and PM that to me so I can check that the database isn’t corrupted somehow.
