Apologies if this has been asked before, but I searched and couldn’t find it.
I have both a FireTV 4K Max and Roku Ultra 4800 plugged into my Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505 receiver, then connected to my Sony 77A80J TV in the family room. While its currently only a 5.1 setup, in the coming weeks this will move to the basement (once finishing is complete) where I’ll have 5.1.4 setup and support Atmos.
I have ripped most of my UHD discs to MKV files. The audio is TrueHD with Atmos.
I know neither of these players support TrueHD, or passthrough and the audio gets transcoded during playback as expected. On the Roku the audio gets transcoded to EAC3, 1Mbps and the receiver tells me the input is DD+ 7.1 Ch B. The Fire TV gets OPUS, 1Mbps and the receiver tells me the input is DD+ 5.1.
Because the TrueHD track has Atmos, will the transcoded audio still have Atmos? Would the Roku be the better choice in what I have? Or should I expect to lose Atmos all together using the Roku Ultra or FireTV 4K Max with Plex? (I can’t test at the moment since I won’t have the “atmos” speakers connected until I move to the basement)
Am I going to need to get a Shield Pro if I want to keep Atmos for these rips and Plex? (or just use the discs in the player?)
