TrueHD TV OLEDxxG39 with Soundbar ds90qy

Hi and sorry if this topic doesn’t fit here but I give up.

Can Plex direct play TrueHD with the following setup or not? TV OLEDxxG39 with Soundbar ds90qy.

When I play a movie with TrueHD 7.1 or 5.1, the sound is converted from TrueHD 5.1 to AAC for example, which would not be bad but the SRT subs are then also converted, which is why streaming is not possible via a PI5.

Any suggestions? Why are the SRT subs converted when the sound is converted?

Acquire an Nvidia Shield Pro or Amazon FireStick 4K Gen 2.

No TV, from any manufacturer, supports passthrough of TrueHD audio from TV based apps. When playing TrueHD audio, it will be transcoded by Plex Media Server to another format.

When using the Plex LG app, if the media is direct streaming, such as when audio is transcoding, enabling any form of subtitles results in a video transcode.

Audio passthrough from devices attached to HDMI inputs is handled differently by the LG TV. It will passthrough TrueHD and DTS-HD MA audio from such devices.

The Nvidia Shield Pro and Amazon FireStick 4K Gen 2 both support TrueHD passthrough. The Shield Pro will also passthrough DTS-HD MA/DTS:X. The FireStick passes only the lossy DTS 5.1 core audio.

The Plex Android TV app, used by the Shield & FireStick, is not as limited as the Plex LG app. It will direct play subtitles even if the audio is transcoding (so no video transcodes).

The connection will be:

Shield/FireStick ← HDMI → Soundbar ← HDMI-eARC → LG TV
or
Shield/FireStick ← HDMI → LG TV ← HDMI-eARC → Soundbar

Note: Do not acquire the non-Pro Shield (aka “tube” model). It is not as capable as the Pro model. It has problems with high bit-rate media such as 4K HDR remuxes with lossless audio.

Thank you for your reply and also for the link to further information.

First of all, the positive thing is that with the G3 DTS and Direct Play is now possible again and even after setting the check mark in the Plex settings of the LG TV DTS Direct Play is played back, which only led to picture but no sound with the G2.

But what surprises me and you would have to ask LG, in 2017 there was a lot of advertising to bring True HD to LG TV and what surprises me even more is that True HD is mentioned in the specification of the G4:

“Supported HDMI Audio format (Depending on model): True HD (48 kHz),”
https://gscs-b2c.lge.com/downloadFile?fileId=6qA7sEQBZw4w6UXGxBVZA

I just don’t know if the True HD with 48kHz corresponds to that on a 4k UHD ala Dune 2011 and what is meant by depending on model.

The other point and this is already discussed and mentioned in your linked post, why does plex transcode the SRT/PGS subtitles. That makes no sense to me at all. Who from the Plex team can you ask to get a logical answer?

@morganj can you support and answer the question?

In the meantime I think there is a bug in the Plex LG app, could someone have a look at it and have it checked?
Yes

They test passthrough for devices attached to TV HDMI inputs, not for TV based apps.

rtings

should DLNA direct play work ? or the plex team should update the app I see no difference to a source that is connected to the TV compared to the plex app
