I just started the monthly sub of Plex pass to kick the tires and see if I want to commit to the full thing. Part of what I was expecting was that I can add a user, they can have a sign in, and they can have access to my media server. It seems with managed accounts you have to use the admin username/password to sign into each person’s device (which is retarded), OR they can have their own plex account and then have access to my content. But the catch there is it’s a separate free account which means they have to pay for the apps if they want to stream from an iOS device, which is also retarded because they are just watching content from my own server. So what’s the deal here with users? How can I give them access to my server from any device without having to use my credentials or requiring their own account and then forking over money for the app?
You can add regular Plex users to your Plex Home. They will then get the ability to activate the mobile apps.
But doesn’t the activation cost them $5? I’m paying for the pass and even paid the $5 for the app on my Apple account last year
No. Members of Plex Home inherit your Plex Pass ability to activate the app.
Anyone you put in your Plex home can use our mobile app for free just by signing into it.
If they leave your plex home or your Plex Pass expires for some reason then that benefit will cease.
Could it be this isn’t working because the invitation is pending? I invited them to my Plex Home (they created an account, not a managed user), got the email and confirmed the invitation but their account is still pending…I’ve tried this 2x already
There is an issue with sending invitations to users that don’t have a Plex account prior to the invitation. Cancel and resend a new invitation.
Third time is the charm! Man, I was a bit worried…and thank you @BigWheel for the clarification. That’s what I thought the setup was supposed to be but it seemed the issue boiled down to pending user issue
