TS and MKV mixed up together

Why does my DVR record some files in MKV format and others in TS format? same channel same show, same resolution, same tuner card, I have the option checked to encode as it records as my machine is very fast, I prefer mkv files even though both work fine.

just a bit of curiosity

What version of server are you running. It should only make ts files now

latest version, I thought I spied two of different types on same date stamp but I might have been mistaken, I think they are being recorded as TS for the most part now, isn’t MKV a better container and more portable? why the change I wonder?

I believe it had to do with Closed Captions.

because for client that can direct play TS, types of subtitles and other things that come in the streams require a TS file to work properly. if client can play the video and audio streams necessary a direct stream (aka remux ) uses very little processing power

The .ts files created in PMS 1.8 breaks subtitles though: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/282096/pms-1-8-does-not-capture-any-uk-subtitles-on-any-programme-yet-the-hdhomerun-software-does
