Turning off Windows Efficiency Mode for PlexAmp v4.11.0?

Windows Efficiency Mode is turned on for PlexAmp v4.11.0 in Windows 11, which is leading to buffering during playback of FLAC files hosted on my device while using other simple applications that I did not previously experience. I’m using less than half of my system resources, but the app is buffering like I’m maxing out when I’m just running Firefox (only 4 tabs open) & listening to PlexAmp.

I was able to turn EM off permanently for my browsers through their own settings, but PlexAmp is going to be a bit trickier (or impossible right now), I assume. Any ideas? I should note that if you turn off EM for PlexAmp in the Task Manager, it just comes back on a few minutes later.

Appended this to the target in my PlexAmp shortcut & EM is shut off: " --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess"

I’ve only ever found this command line parameter to get used in conjunction with Chrome/Chromium-based browsers.
Not sure it would have an effect on Plexamp.

What kind of hardware are you using? Is it a laptop? And if so, how much charge is left in the battery when Eco mode is applied?

The command line in the shortcut target worked to shut EM off for PlexAmp permanently, but I’m still having issues with local 96/24 FLAC files buffering when Firefox loads pages. It may just be an issue with the new update? I never experienced this with previous versions of PlexAmp. I initially diagnosed it as EM because EM slaughtered my browser speeds before I fixed those & I hadn’t seen EM being used for PA prior to this update.
I have a desktop that I also use as my media server. Processor is AMD Ryzen 3200G (3.6 GHz) & I have 32 GB of RAM (DDR4 3200 MHz). My FLAC files are all stored on a SSD. All system resources regularly run below 50%.

I don’t see these issues on my system (Intel/nVidia).

What is the power policy which is set for Windows in general?
It should not be on “Power saving”, but at least on “Balanced”.

Do you have an nVidia GPU? If you do, make sure that it is not setting Plexamp to power saving mode.

How many (and which) of the Energy Recommendations from the Windows control panel under System - Performance have been activated?

I have my Windows power settings on “Ultimate Performance”.
I do have an nVidia GPU. How do I see what programs it’s setting to power saving mode? Power management is currently set to “Optimal”.

I only have the “Turn off my screen after 3 minutes” & “Turn off my screen saver” options set for the Windows Energy Reccs.

That’s alright as a global default.
Try creating a special rule just for Plexamp and set it to “high performance”.

Thanks. I set the high performance special rule for PA. I’m not seeing much change for buffering on 96/24 FLACs while loading pages in browsers (tested FF, Chrome, Edge), but my Adobe Cloud programs are all running without PA buffering hi-res files, at least. Very strange since I’d assume Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. are a much bigger drag on resources than a browser loading a Reddit page :man_shrugging:

Take a look at the settings of Plexamp.
Playback - Caching
Try reducing the pre-caching number of files and/or the max. size of the cache.

Do also check if there is a bandwidth limit set for precaching and remove it.

Checked & I already have both set to the lowest possible (next track for WiFi Caching & 512 MB for cache size). All files are played directly from my SSD. The songs buffer for a second or 2 after they’re already playing when I load / reload a page within a browser.

What about the bandwidth limit setting?

Are you using a 3rd-party anti-virus software?

Fetch Plexamp logs immediately after such a buffering incident.

Logs attached after a 5 second-ish buffer during Firefox loading at 13:52:
Plexamp.log (168.5 KB)

Network speed is unlimited since I’m playing local files & use ethernet connected to gigabit internet.

My anti-virus is BitDefender.

Try without it for a while.

I turned off Advanced Threat Defense & that seems to have resolved it.
