TV episode sort order changed in latest PMS version

The latest version of PMS (I’m using Version 1.3.0.3059) has broken the sort order for TV episodes.

Instead of ordering by episode number (the logical way, in my mind) it sorts by aired date. To confuse us even more, if for some reason Plex cannot find an air date (the TVDB is down, or the series has not been updated there, for example) it will put those episodes at the top of the list, even though it correctly identifies it as “Episode XX” from the file name. This is the probably the way I would expect “On Deck” to work in most cases, but not the way I want the listing for a series or season to appear.

This new “Random Order Agent” over-rides the default TV agent, as well as the DVDOrderAgent many use for those special circumstances such as “Firefly” On the positive side, it probably clears up a lot of problems I have read about “Doctor Who”

Please reconsider this sorting method, and return to the logical “sort by episode number.”

With so may categories and sub-forums here, reports of bugs and common problems are often scattered all over the place, and it appears as a one-off glitch. I’m posting here hoping it is a little more visible to all Here are a few I have found, suggesting it may be more common…

as well as a “Feature Request” I made in the Plex Pass forums, in case this isn’t just a bug, but a new feature of the Plex Media Server:

In my case at least, the episodes are named properly - SHOW NAME - SXXEXX in season sub-folders, under the TV show folder. There is no embedded meta-data except a language tag for the audio track(s)

I am running Version 1.3.2.3112 and don’t notice anything out of whack. Firefly, with the DVDOrderAgent also appears normally (in their ‘altered’ order). I will say that a recent update - maybe your posted version above - whacked out the ordering for the entire TV Show Library (from Name to Date Added) requiring 'a bump to another sort method and a rebump back to Name, but after that all appears normally.

At least here in Juicetown.

@JuiceWSA
Updated PMS to version Version 1.3.2.3112 >>>Wrong Order on Firefly
Refreshed the Firefly TV series >>> Wrong Order
Rematched TV series with the DVDOrderAgent >>> Wrong Order
Reinstalled latest DVDOrderAgent, restarted server, rinse, repeat >>> Wrong Order

What other way can I bump and re-bump to get the right order?

I haven’t tried the Plex Dance yet. I really don’t want to do that, find out it didn’t help and have Firefly show up as newly added in TV shows. Therefore, because of 50 episode limit feature (my other major annoyance) a bunch of Recently Added TV episodes will disintegrate, because I have all of the extras from the DVD and the Serenity movie added as Season 00 (Specials) for a total of 27 episodes.
the way it looks now:

To prove I’'m not going crazy, I added a fake Arrow episode. S05E30. It doesn’t exist so no metadata to retrieve, but one would think episode 30 should show as last, right. NOPE! The best part is I get to lose all of the thumbnails, for every other episode, as well as the season posters for all 5 seasons.

And as added bonus, The Roku apps (all of them, including Classic and Rarflix) show the wrong order and lose posters and episode thumbnails too. Haven’t tried any other apps…

EDIT: removing the fake episode brings back the posters and thumbnails

Well, my Firefly looks just like yours in Plexweb, but note the episode number under the ‘out of order’ episodes. Those episode numbers are, in fact, the DVDOrderAgent listings and ultimately the ‘correct’ order. They do appear on Deck in the proper order at least the next episode in this, the 47th showing of Firefly is showing correctly, but it all could come crashing down around me when I actually go to watch the next episode. I’ll let you know.

I do seem to recall them showing up correctly in Plexweb - as in according to their episode numbers below, but anything is possible with this many miles on the odometer. I guess if they actually play back correctly I’ll have to be happy, but you don’t have to be happy and if you want I’ll be pissed right along with you.

Why do you have Blue 2s? That may not be important.

As for ‘the bump’ that happened only at the library level when I noticed it all out of whack. I ‘bumped’ to Date Released, then back to ‘Name’ and it fixed it. There is no such option where we’re looking now.

Come to think of it - I am getting pissed. Will that help?

Yeah, the episodes are labeled correctly, but I’m kinda ■■■■ and OCD about stuff like that and I’m sure would have noticed the out of order sorting and edited each episode manually to get the correct order.

The Blue Twos (sounds like a band name) indicate there are low quality versions I make for some friends who have a really slow internet connection so my server doesn’t have to transcode and they get automatic direct play with their roku

Yea, they used to appear in our ‘correct’ order because I remember being so proud of myself when I got the DVDOrderAgent installed and Firefly finally looked like it should have from jump street.

Now I am pissed!

Unfortunately for us - me being pissed hasn’t done a dam thing about:
Horizontal Lists
Discovery Hubs
More Like:
Other Titles Staring Clem Kaddidlehopper
Because You Watched
AutoPlay (that just won’t go away)
and everything else I don’t want and didn’t ask for that ultimately builds a wall between me and my media.

Maybe this is just more of what Plex knows is good for us?

How much would you like to wager on this being ignored until it moves off the front page? Sucker Bet? How 'bout we keep bumping it until it does garner a response - or becomes the longest running thread in Plex Forum History?

I’ve tried polite bumping, aggressive bumping, stomping my feet and throwing the keyboard at the monitor hoping someone in the know will at least acknowledge a post.
… as this thread slowly fades into the sunset

I’m AFK right now, but I’ll respond in 8 hours/when the thread moves 3/4s of the way down the page.

Please Stand By…

So… How’s it going, @leelynds ?

I see this thread and the other threads about this issue have apparently acquired some bacterial infestation that is preventing them from being touched by those that created the issue.

Your turn - but give it about 8 hours.

It has happened to me too, all my tv shows were sorted fine before the update, now they all are messed up, what happened?

Repeating what I posted in another thread:

It’s really annoying. Not because it’s a bug - stuff happens, and I can accept that.

But no acknowledgement in this or any of the other threads scattered all over the place regarding this glitch. Best I have seen was a Ninja saying he couldn’t replicate the issue (which means we have done something wrong, in my mind)

Apparently, it’s supposed to work this way. 8-}

Gee, I thought when I got Firefly lined up the way it was supposed to be, that was supposed to be the way it worked. Now you’re telling me that’s not the way it’s supposed to work, supposedly?

I’m crushed, but pretty soon someone will show up and explain it to us. Of that I am confident.

Traction:

You’ll want to appear there.

Got it. Thanks

Well, that ‘other thread’ fell off the front page pretty quickly, didn’t it?

So discouraging to see more threads showing up in the forums regarding this problem, and if there is a response, one would think there could at least be a copy and paste reply similar to this:
(from Plex Pass forums - http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/248406/bug-plex-v1-3-x-still-isnt-displaying-metadata-correctly-for-some-agents-logs-included)

We have an issue internally discussing how to address this change (whether to revert, or to improve to make it better in more case where either air date or S/E is missing).

… and then redirect everyone to a thread where we can view status - preferably NOT in the Plex Pass forums, because this issue affects the current general version of PMS. My opinion, for what it’s worth, is revert. This might be a case of fixing something that wasn’t broken.

Keep me in the loop as I have no access to the Elite Users forum.

Thanks for that copy/paste.

Hey guys, just wanted to provide some info. Yes, there was a change in PMS to favor the aired date instead of episode order. We did not think there would be such an impact as we thought most people were using TheTVDB ordering. A fix is being added and hopefully a new PMS will be released soon.
