TV Library - Show Watch Order

Hi all,

One feature for the TV Show library that would be great to implement would be something that allows you to watch TV shows in the correct order.

Two examples of this from the top of my head would be The X-Files and Battlestar Galactica (2003).

For the X-Files:

  • Seasons 1 through 5 are watched as normal
  • Before season 6, we are meant to watch the "Fight the Future" movie - S00E01
  • Then we watch season 6 through 9
  • Before season 10, we are meant to watch the "I Want to Believe" movie - S00E06
  • Then we watch season 10

For Battlestar Galactica:

  • Before Season 1, we are meant to watch the miniseries - S00E01 & S00E02
  • Then season 1
  • Then season 2
  • Then "The Resistance" - S00E23 through S00E32
  • Then season 3
  • Then "Razor" - S00E33 through S00E39
  • Then season 4 episodes 1 through 10
  • Then "The Face of the Enemy" - S00E10 through S00E19
  • Then season 4 episodes 11 through 19
  • Then anther special, etc etc etc

I'm sure you understand what I'm getting at. There are specials mixed in all over the place in the above two shows.

Plex doesn't seem to honor this, and when you're using "On Deck" to watch the next episode of a season, it skips the specials.

It would be great if there was a way you could change the order in which TV shows are played, so that the relevent specials are included if you have them.

The data appears to already be included in TheTVDB's metadata that Plex is using. Each special has an "Airs After Season" and "Airs Before" field. With this data, Plex could determine where to place the specials within each TV show.

Thanks for your time.

Kind regards,

Mike Nye

Plex itself has no way of understanding any of this information directly. The particular order a show is "supposed" to be watched all comes from the show's metadata - specifically the Aired date most of the time. All this metadata comes from TheTVDB.com. If the Specials on TheTVDB don't have this right, I'd recommend fixing that first.

The OnDeck tile for the show is supposed to follow the aired date ordering and in turn mix in the specials. It does this for me all the time. However the On Deck has following problem. If there is a special you are supposed to watch next but you go into the show itself and just select the next episode normally the On Deck tile will skip that special and keep following the last episode you told it to watch.

So if you watch something and only select the next episode from On Deck, it should work as expected, but if you start clicking episodes it can fumble the order.

Hi Orion,

Thanks for the detailed response. So I've been launching the first episode via "On Deck", then once the episode has finished, just pressing the right arrow on the remote to go to the next episode. I'm assuming this will just go to the next episode in the series - this might be where I'm going wrong.

It looks like I need to exit back to the main screen, and choose the next episode via On Deck - no problems - I'll start doing that.

Thanks again.

this is similar to this request

but I agree, this is really really necessary, plex totally messed up Dr Who for me... I had never seen the series and when I did I skipped all the specials which really messed up the story

thanks plex!
