I’m hoping someone has been through this already and can save me some grief. I’ve reviewed the recommended Media and folder namIng conventions and TV Show seems to be the closest Plex format. Is it possible to multiple clips for an event grouped as a ‘season’ that has a text description. Example would be show named ‘Christmas 2019’ and seasons would be ‘Moms house’ and ‘Dads House’ etc. each with multiple clips. Suggestions?
TV Show Library is correct.
Fix Match/Search Options/Agent/Personal Media
That will tell Plex this is a Personal Item - and Plex won’t mess you up trying to match it. <— or Blow your Edits when it does - and it will.
Now you’ve done that - there is no way to get exactly what you want, but you can do this:
A TV Show Library Folder/
.......Family Movie Time/ <---whatever you want here
...........Season 2019/ <---the most obvious is a year type season, but you pick
.............Family Movie Time - S2019E01 - Christmas at Mom's.xxx
.............Family Movie Time - S2019E02 - Christmas at Dad's.xxx
............and so on...
There are limits to what you can do and you must stick very close to the TV Show rules of behavior for naming and structuring - ‘very close’ means ‘exactly’ - if you want Plex to work.
No, Plex won’t take that ‘Episode Name’ from the file, but when you are hand editing this ‘Show’ you’ll edit those in rather quickly.
You can, of course make a ‘Show’ all about Christmas - or any other ‘Show’ you want.
The “Season” can have a text description in the Edit thusly - I just put this one in, for example:
My new hobby is chasing Juice around and antagonizing him, but this is a genuine question.
If these are personally-created files does “TV Show” still make the most sense? Is that how you get the “Season” grouping to appear, even if they’re files that you’ve created?
Would you use “TV Shows” but with the “Personal Media” agent?
I’ve never tried this, but it makes sense. I have some media I might rearrange into this format. Thanks!
I figure since most folks doing this sort of thing want Episodic action - one after the other or groups of activities arranged episode-like.
The only real limitation is the naming and structure of the TV Show must follow the Plex rules in order to remain visible, but then the customization is there to arrange things that make sense in a single show - or several - depending what the imagination and material allows.
Personal Movies/Collections are another way - if you have a few.
TV Shows typically would be easier if you have a lot.
Once the ‘Show’ is set up. The Seasons can be collapsed and that will put everything right up front. If there isn’t 500 of them that’ll probably work out fine.
No matter if it’s a Movie or TV Show Library you choose to put these in Personal Media MUST be selected or Plex will blow every edit every time it tries to match the unmatchable - and that ‘Lock’ button does nothing in that case.
Other Videos Libraries do NOT behave well with Folder structures, but may work fine in a Movie format if you only have a few. If more than one Other Video Library is needed - that could work until you have more than few, then they start stacking up in the side bar to the point of PITAcity with a side bar list that sticks out of the ground in China.
It depends on the material and what the holder of said material dreams up and what Plex will allow. Something can always be done, but you never know what the house is gonna look like until you hire somebody to paint it (I hate painting).
I see in the above screen shot you’ve edited the Season name text an mention editing is possible. I can’t seem to find a place within Plex to do that. Can you provide detail on the page location of that field?
Thanks - I wasn’t aware the “Summary” info would reflect in the ‘Season’ descriptions. I see how this works for you in your screen shot however when I edit the Season Summary, this doesn’t seem to change the Season name for me. I added text to both seasons but nothing changes. Am I missing something?
You cannot change the season name. It will always be called “Season n”.
The description of the season will be shown when you dive down into the season preplay screen.
Thanks to both. As I was Googling this topic I came across the link below. This actually works for changing Season names but not sure what the longer term implications are…
