Plex is lumping random correctly named TV shows into a generic TV Show grouping

Server Version#:Current
Player Version#:Current

Recently any time I add or try to re add media to TV shows it will group random episodes from random shows into the same season grouping for no real reason.

For example. I have seasons 1-7 of the league all named correctly but now season 7 shows up in a generic show titled TV shows with 6 episodes of Gundam and then all of season 2 of hammer house of horror shows up as season 2 with mixed random episodes of other shows. it has about 150 files now that even when deleted readded renamed keep auto grouping into this new TV shows grouping when it should group into the specific show. before this everything always tagged and sorted correctly. the only thing that changed is a reinstall and readd of the library and about 98% of the files sorted and added correctly except for about 150 or so files and now those and anything new all group incorrectly. I have tried deleting them closing plex media server reopening and refreshing the library multiple times then trying to add them to no avail.

What do your files and structure look like?

What path is added to the TV Show Library?

(in my case, G:\Animated Shows holds that section of the TV Show Library)

I have two paths 1 for movies and 1 for tv shows. it couldn’t be more OCD of a labeling convention. Like I said its grabbing random shows and seasons and lumping them in one so I cant even fix match them because there is no way to do it on an indiviudal basis it seems. For example in the picture you listed imagine it grabbed The barb and the troll ep 8-12 and left all the rest of the entire show labeled correctly and then smashed those random episodes into a generic “TV SHOWS” as in that is the label that should just be the show name, for example instead of it listing 12 Monkeys it shows up under “T” TV SHOWS or some weird sweadish word Then TV show so “SWEADISH TV SHOW” and then has seasons 1-X of random shows and seasons it picked inside like all the other shows. I dont even have sub catagories like animated. Just TV SHows/Name of Show(Year)/Season/Name of Show - SeasonEp# - Name of Episode if Known

Please show an example of your folder organization and the file names you are using.

When I ask it to scan files it will grab season 4 and 5 which are labeled the same and label them like the show is named “tv show” and throw them in as season 4 and 5 of the show called “tv show”
Since posting the only work around I have found is to delete anything that is labeled as such. Then add 1 show or season at at time and then Fix Match 1 by 1 and it seems to take. But if I do 2+ different shows at the same time it will not allow me to fix the match as it will label everything as just 1 show even if that is not the case

2 things:

  • use 2-digit season numbers in the folder names as well.
  • Only the folder TV Shows must be added to the library in Plex. Don’t add the folders of the individual shows.

Sorry I don’t know what you mean by this.

sorry i changed it I mean “scan library files”

So when I added Hammer House of Horror labeled In the same way as the example in the picture of aqua teen hunger force it added it as shown
I have also tried it with 2 digit seasons as well and I get the same result, I have also tried no season folder for single seasoned shows and again it gets labeled as Tv Show. So you can see how this becomes a mess when you add multiple shows and random bits all end un in a show called Tv Show. As you can also see its not a global Issue as it can clearly see all the other shows and some how tag them all fine.

What about

Only the folder TV Shows must be added to the library in Plex. Don’t add the folders of the individual shows.

I am not doing that. I only added the TV SHow to the library then as I add to the folder on the HD then I choose to scan library files from the 3 dots on the side to update the shows, the same way I have done since I have installed and used plex. Like I said above this is a recent Issue as in the past week or so since a fresh Install of Windows and most current Plex Media Server and all possible updates from within the program itself

Never do that.

Could you please

  • edit your library, go to the “Add Folders” tab and make a screenshot
  • go to the “Advanced” tab and verify that the checkbox “Prefer local metadata” is not ticked
  • Perform the Plex Dance with “Hammer House
”

I have verified that there is no checkbox ticked for local metadata
same result. I was able to force it to label through Fix Match through the 3 dots but the next item that I tried to add just before this post and after verifying the settings, which is 3 seasons of Night Gallery and it does the same thing except with 3 seasons and so forth

Finally, we have a winner
 Actually a loser.

The Path to The Folder holding all the TV Shows goes there
exactly as shown in my screenshot waaaay up the page

I have MANY TV Show Content Folders - as you can see.
All Media goes in a Folder off the root - and all Media Folders containing TV Shows are added to the Library - as shown in my screenshot above.

If you use that button to ‘Browse’ to your TV Show Library Folder(s) - Plex will put the correct path in for you - unless it’s not - and that would be cause for serious concern.

But here again - you can see the difference:

You can’t aim a Plex Library at the Root of a Drive.
You aim it at the Media Folders off the Root containing the Media (Shows).

IF everyone on Earth put their TV Shows in folders called TV Shows - Plex could work when aimed at the Root
however, a look at my screenshot explains in painful detail why that’s not possible.

I don’t have many TV Show Content Folders called TV Shows.
I need to tell Plex where they are.

Juice is right. Pointing Plex at the root folder (i.e. the “naked” drive letter) is a no-no – particularly with a tv show library.

Yep that was my mistake. Works great now. Thanks for all your time and help!

That - is good news.

Now you know

Would you be able to explain if this is okay?

In here I have 365 tv shows or folders.

Of course, IF all your shows inside are following these rules: Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support
