TV play back based on release date

I did a search for this topic and did not see any similar I apologize if it has already be suggested.

Request:
Would it be possible to add a play back option for TV Shows and episodes based on release date both in the series and especially in the collections. Currently the only advanced option I see is a shuffle in the collections.

Reason:
With normal series, TV shows often have specials that are meant to be watched in order with other episodes but currently they would be listed in season 0 not in line with the season it was meant to be watched with so you would have to manually know when to stop and go into specials to watch it.

With collections, this would allow you to watch shows that may be connected and have crossovers setting it up to allow you to watch everything in order. The Arrowverse comes to mind here, or have all of the old TGIF shows play in order where you can watch multiple episodes in a night but not binging on a single show (basically making your own TV line up like the networks do)

Thank you.

Continue Watching and the post-play screen should already consider mid-season specials based on their air date.

As an example:
If you watched Doctor Who (2005) s02e13 (“Doomsday”), Plex won’t suggest to continue with s03e01 but the 2006 X-Mas special instead (“The Runaway Bride”).

Alternatively you can of course create a collection of episodes and configure it to sort the episodes by release date.

  • For a regular/classic collection, you can set their order when editing the collection (Advanced > Collection order).
  • For a smart collection you can specify the search order when creating/editing its filters.

As a side note – there’s an existing feature suggestion asking for an option to display specials inline with an episode based on their air date.

Thank you for the reply, I had not seen the play back option suggest episodes from the specials it may be because I usually hit the next button to move to the next episode before that comes up so it is good that there is already a feature on that I will go vote for it.

As for the collections I have it set based on the date but that appears to only put the series in order by date as an example perfect strangers, family matters (which was a spinoff from perfect strangers), step by step. So with this order it would play all of perfect strangers then all of family matters then all of step by step (at least that is the way it worked for me in the past I am revisiting this now and on the new version of the plex server I cannot get any of my collections to play right now)

Based on your comment I did go into a series and down to the individual episodes and I do not see a way in the plex app to add individual episodes to a collection only the entire series. I guess I could add them to a playlist and do what I want but I would like to allow access to it who I share my media with.

make sure create a collection of episodes – not shows or seasons.
(multi) select the episodes of those shows, then click on Add to in the context menu and select the collection to which you want to add them.

Depending on how many episodes there are it might be easiest to display your library by episodes and filter it to the shows you want to view – then select them all and add them to the collection of your choice.

If you add an entire show to a collection, you get a collection of shows…

Thank you, for the information. I was selecting the episodes and doing an edit and trying to add a collection under the tags I thought the add button was only for playlists but I can see the option to add to collections now so I can make that work. It still would be nice to have an option to auto do this from a collection of series but this option will work.
Thanks again.
