I am sure this question has been raised for long.
Normally a TV series file name is SXXEXX.mkv, I have tried both ShowName.S001.E001.mkv and ShowName.S001E001.mkv both works, plex is good to organized it into the correct season and episodes.
However, it loads up some title and summary of the episode from some unknown places. I tried to rename the file to ShowName.S001.E001 - Title.mkv but plex failed to update the title according to the filename.
I tried removing the file from the folder, refresh plex and put the file back in, yet still no luck.
as I have nearly 100 episodes every season, is there a way for me to update the titles appropriately?
Also, if there are some capability to create an XML file containing titles of all episodes so that plex can load them into every single episodes would be fantastic.
A TV Show Library/
…A TV Show/
…Season 01/
…A TV Show - S01E01.mkv
If you want TV Shows to work the first time every time - do that.
If you want more ‘adventure’ in your life - do something else.
The inability of Plex to write a new bundle in place of a bogus bundle is a bug old enough to start drawing social security, but, the ‘Work-Around’ is just as old:
Basically the season and episode things work fine with
A TV Show - S01E01.mkv,
everything is well organized and displayed properly in Plex.
Is there any luck for Plex to extract title of each episode from the File name?
As Plex simply loads up some titles from TVDB I guess, but not all of them
If they match at TVDB and TVDB has the correct episode name listed, that name will show.
A large number of episodes are named ‘Episode One’ (e.g.), unfortunately.
You’ll have to make sure your episodes are matching.
Go to TVDB and make sure you’re using the correct name and that episode name is being retrieved: http://thetvdb.com/
Give me the name of the show/episode - I’ll run some tests.
Indeed I am managing a Japanese Anime “One Piece”, I followed this link to organize my Seasons and Episode, I managed to match all episode metadata from TVDB as the below link. http://thetvdb.com/?tab=seasonall&id=81797&lid=7
A little pity that the TVDB only contains english episode title, and I indeed want to manually set those titles with my list of Japanese/Chinese names. Is there any way for Plex to read in the optional_info part of the filename and override the TVDB title of each episode?

A TV Show - S01E01.mkv,
I just wanted to thank you for this post. I have been racking my brain, trying to fix this, and your example made me compare it to what I had. One thing I found is that I has s01e01 instead of S01E01. I fixed that. Then I was realizing I was expecting movie library to pick up tv shows. It did, but with bad file names, posters and metadata. I needed to add the folder to a TV Shows Library, not the movies library. Now I have the right formula! So satisfying.

The episode naming (s01e01 bit) is NOT case sensitive, but you MUST use the name TVDB uses and follow the TV Show Naming Guide to the letter, if you expect to have things work right.
