tvOS TV App

Noting the recent announcement of the tvOS TV App has anybody looked into the documentation for using Plex within the new TV App.

From the limited preview we’ve had it looks like a great way to view you Plex content, provided Apple allows third party access.

Sadly, like Siri search, this is currently limited to a select group of companies that Apple chooses to partner with.

Lets hope they open it up to third parties in the near future.

This would be an amazing enhancement. The TV app currently is pretty disappointing. Plex would make it a lot better, especially if it could then search Plex and any subscribed apps like Netflix, Hulu, or HBO at once.

I think Siri integration may come some time in the future but I can’t foresee Plex ever making it to Apple’s new TV app. Is there any way to create a similar recommendations experience in Plex? Perhaps using Trakt integration, since they have a Discover feature?

I agree it is unlikely, but it would be great if Plex could push for it. I might actually have a use for that TV app then. This would be a great way to integrate Plex with iTunes purchased movies and TV shows. Then essentially Apple could be a way to buy new media to view as part of your full library. I have seen other discussions about a channel for Amazon Prime Instant Video or some other service to purchase media. This would be a good way around something like that.

I’m sure they are, but I feel they’re at the mercy of Apple.

As it currently stands Siri just translates voice to text on the device, then sends all commands to Apple’s online search services. These services pick up certain key words and can search online catalogues of third party services, but they have no way to see catalogues of your own local apps because Apple hasn’t created an API for it.

Apple is starting to open up API calls for certain functionality on iOS devices. There’s nothing relevant to Plex yet, it’s all payment app or health tracking app related. But this in itself is a HUGE shift in how Siri works which means there is hope that one day they’ll bring in API’s to let us search and load media from local media catalogues.

Maybe the TV app will bring the integration and linking abilities required for Siri integration? Who knows, it’s mostly a case of waiting and watching ATM.

On Deck accomplishes the Up Next feature that is in Apple’s TV app. Discovery should be accomplished in the Discover tab but I feel like the developers have abandoned further development of recommendations because some people threw a tantrum that they the “All” screen wasn’t the default screen when opening up library sections.

For people with large libraries an improved Discover page would be a huge feature, but I’m not holding out hope.

Agreed, I’m afraid they may have abandoned trying to implement a recommendations feature given the bad response then. But then the response was kind of justified, the recommendations were rudimentary and random (eg. movies by “random little-known producer”) and interfering with browsing of our content (which is the main purpose of Plex anyway). It would be better to have a separate Discover page/tab as you mentioned.

It would be great if there’s some way Plex can provide some automated curation of our local content (eg. top movies/TV shows last week as in Trakt). Hopefully, Plex will also add a proper Collections feature (which has been requested for ages) to allow for some individual personalisation. It would be even better if it’s cross-library (i.e. related movies and TV shows grouped together).
