This doesn’t happen all the time but I will get two icons for the same program in my Continue Watching section. There is only one file on my server. Only one.
When I played one of the versions it started playing ads which are NOT in the file on my server. Sometime there are just two of the same show appearing in the section.
I’m confused…which is not unusual! Any help is appreciated.
When you have an item in the home-screen “continue watching” hub, it will pull any copy of the show it can find from any pinned (visible) library on the left-hand side. In most cases, people may point multiple libraries at the same folder location (for reasons).
Here, I suspect that the “Movies and Shows on Plex” are responsible. If you see ads, it is also pulling the Dresden Files which is also available for free streaming on Plex’s own free service.
Edit: the solution is to unpin the free shows source from your left-hand side. Or, go to YOUR library and use it’s continue watching hub to select the correct one.
I’m guessing you have Movies & Shows pinned in your sidebar so it is contributing to the home screen continue watching.
I’m guessing you also have Watch State Syncing enabled for your account which is why Movies & Shows has previous episodes as watched and putting next or the same partially watched in CW.
Not sure if you ever initially watched in on Movies & Shows, ( I can’t personally repro when i only watch something on my server) but I think this is something we are tying to looking into for how to solve that when it happens to some folks when we have the same show that is on your server.
For right now you can unpin Movies & Shows from your sidebar. You can always get to it when you want to from MORE ( or disable it in Online Media Sources settings if you don’t use it.)

We’ve seen a few posts recently that trace back to this, including everyone’s favorite “PlEx IS aDdiNG COMmeRcIALs tO My FiLES” rants. It would be awesome if you guys could add a config option somewhere like “Prefer local files for Continue Watching” so server admins could disable this behavior.
I would actually keep Movies & Shows on Plex pinned if I could eliminate this issue.
