I have a question about adding custom pictures/posters. I know I can add files to my library, or from within the client, I can add the picture from the Edit option of an episode or show. My question is about how PMS stores this info after it’s added.
If I add the picture using the Edit function, I do not see the file added in my library structure, so I assume the photo is stored in the metadata library somewhere. But, if I add the .jpg to my media library, does PMS duplicate the entire photo in metadata or does it just link to the photo file I’ve added in my library?
If putting the file in my library helps to keep the size of my metadata smaller, I would prefer to do it that way. But if the entire photo gets duplicated into my metadata anyways, then I will just add them via Edit.
The files you add via the Edit > Posters dialog are stored in your Plex data folder.
If you want to ensure your custom posters remain accessible (e.g. after a server re-build), you might treat them as local media assets and store them directly among your media.
As for storage space… posters are tiny compared to your movies… so that extra MB shouldn’t bother you too much.
Thanks, tom80H. To clarify, if I add the file as a local asset, is it duplicated in the data folder, or does the data folder just create a link to the local asset? I am running on a Raspberry Pi 4, with my Plex database residing on the MicroSD card, so I prefer to keep the custom files on my media drive just to manage the size of the data folder. Just confirming that a photo added as a local asset only creates a link in the database, and not a duplicated jpg file.
