UI Latency

Hi, first off I am new to rasplex and it looks great and works great the only issue I have seen and have is the UI seems to lag a bit, While it is fine for me getting the wife to accept a UI experience slower than she is use to can be challenging to say the least...

I have gone through and tried getting the cache warmed up, the lag happens everywhere when browsing in a section or on the main screen and it does not seem to be getting any better after going through the cache warm up steps (browsing the all tv shows / All movies area)

I tried .35 and .37 and neither one seems to work any better than the other. I was hoping maybe the SD artwork in .35 world help but it did not.

I also tried undoing the overclocking and it also does not seem to have an affect. I also tried up the over clock and performance was unchanged.

I can browse the menu system fine with no network connection soon as I connect it to the network that is when the latency is introduced. This is via Wifi or via ethernet neither one seems to be any worse than the other.  I have a fully Gigabit network, Wireless N, My Media center is a dedicated file server and there is no issue from any of my non Rasplex clients.

I am using a Raspberry PI B 512Mb

Any suggestions or things i can try to swap or try let me know

I would suggest trying a skin other than the default.  Mainstream has been the most updated skin, and therefore is a bit...bloated.

I switched over to Refocus and noticed a huge jump in speed.

Thanks alot, Switched to Refocus back to blue almost all lag is gone.

I have recently installed RasPlex on the 512mb model B, and I'm very impressed with both how easy it was to set up and the video playback. However, I, too, have noticed a lot of UI lag. The UI is quite smooth for me until I hit TV, Music or Movies sections (as in, if I just highlight the section in the main menu). I have a very large media library and use the OnDeck feature a lot - I wonder if it's to do with the rendering of the OnDeck and also having to load a new background image when you highlight a different section?

I have tried ReFocus, which I used to use on my desktop too, however have found that it's somewhat inconsistent when it comes to showing the backgrounds, and sometimes the OnDeck will never show up. It's also, for me at least, not much faster than MediaStream anyway..

So yeah, I think the problem with the UI for me at least is that scrolling past video sections causes the OnDeck/Recently Added to show, which I think are pulled from the server every time (maybe Rasplex should keep a cached copy then background update it when you scroll to the section..). I think the reason Refocus is faster is that it does not automatically show the OnDeck by default.

You can setup refocus to show it by default and it seems as if there is a slight 1 second pause before it pulls the info so that you can scroll easily past. One thing i noticed is after leaving the PI running for 48 hours it has gotten slow again, i connected via SSH, killed the plex process (simulate closing plex desktop client and relaunching) and it was smooth again. that leads me to... memory leaks maybe?

Hi, i have taken it upon myself to try and see if i can do any visual tweaks to try and improve the perceived ui experience with the oob theme. The experience we are having is 90% down to certain aspects of the theme. Now RasPlex does not use the stock theme but a slightly modded one to handle all its great additional settings.

I have a model B running against a synology arm processor NAS so in terms of lag and latency, boy dont I know about it :) and i would say in terms of performance i am the lowest common denominator.

Now, im a total novice at this but i am a .NET developer so at least have a head start. I have taken a copy of the rasplex theme and started making a few changes, mainly to animation times and found that this really makes for an improved snappier experience.

For example I noticed a really sluggish jolty animation whilst browsing between my media sections on the wrapped list on main home screen, I adjusted the global time delay, and reduced the timespan of the scrolling animation between the items on the menu and hey presto....i now have something that is perceived to be snappier and faster even though the background data work is still unchanged. Some of these animations also have an initial delay added to them which doesn't help matters at all.

Its early days and im not sure how much milage or how successful i will be but If i do manage to get something viable I will post it for all.

In regards to the search screen and that annoying "Feature" of getting stuck in it, well i can confirm that its not down to the theme but key mappings and hell, I will have a crack at that also.

Fingers crossed, this may be a long bumpy ride.

Yoadster.

I am having a hard time installing the skin .Can you provide a step by step process on SSH into the raspberry pi and how to install the skin. Thanks!

Can you go into more detail about what changes you did to the animations?

Use filezilla in SFTP mode.

Sure, for starters there is a global setting called effects slowdown which has a main purpose of slowing down all animations globally. This was set at 0.8 but now is 0.4 which speeds up the animations globally. Secondly I have changed the list animation speed on the home screen list to a fraction of what it was so it’s almost non existent but not quite. Is my opinion that the over heavy use of animation on this skin is on main contributing factor to it’s sluggishness in some areas and we can do something to tackle this.
