I currently use plex which runs on Ubuntu 18.04 and looking for something to start recording and allow streaming to 4 tvs around the house (not all in use at same time)
We currently have Sky Q and was thinking of ditching this and switching to freeview but not all tvs have access to an aerial, thus reason I’m looking at the homerun.
Would the homerun be the best option for what we want, are there issues with it on a Linux system (will plex work fully with it it do I need to install other software). Can you use multiple units so one does recording and another is used for watching.
Hi, I am in the UK and do this (although on windows).
You need a Plex pass and an HD Homerun plugged into your LAN. Plex will find the Homerun and download the guide for it. It works pretty well and gives you all of the Freeview channels.
I usually just record things on Plex and watch them later but live TV works too. Changing channels is quicker using the HD Homerun app on your device so tend to use that to watch live TV.
Edit - there are two models of Homerun, a 2 tuner and a 4 tuner model, so just buy the one that matches the number of simultaneous channels you think you might need. Plex will work out how many tuners it has which can be used for a mixture of recordings and live TV. You don’t need any other software other than optionally the Homerun app.

More opinion than fact, but yes.

HDHomeruns are network based and don’t require drivers on the server, Plex fully supports them.

Multiple units are supported, you can’t force Plex to use one over the other, it uses first available.
Problems usually occur when clients can’t direct play mpeg2 and the server is low power like a raspberry pi.
