Hello, I am trying to figure out the setup for live tv on plex. i didnt see anything in the search in regards to this particular topic. however if there is one, please let me know and i will remove this topic.
For setting up live tv, i didnt know if i should get the duo or quad for hd homerun. that said, we have 3 or 4 tvs we could watch from. will they all use just one channel if its running through plex? also, can any of my managed users also use live tv, and will it eat up a channel? i dont want to spend the extra money on a quad if a duo channel homerun will do the trick. also, when looking to record dvr, can i configure it to use my NAS that i am using for my media currently? i have about 5tb of usable available that i can record to.
any help is greatly appreciated, thank you everyone!
I cannot answer about live TV as I watch recorded content exclusively. I can comment on HDHomeRun and would advise to go with the quattro. Every channel viewed uses a tuner unless two or more TVs are watching the same channel. So if you are recording one event and viewing another live on a different channel, the duo is already maxed out.
Depending on your NAS, HDHR makes excellent apps to handle all recordings for consumption. You can check the HDHR site for specifics on which app to load on your NAS.
I have a dedicated HTPC that was used for recording OTA content. After going with an HDHR and the NAS application, the HTPC is no longer needed. I run the content from HDHR thru PLEX and Roku. This is as close to my best MS Media Center PC as I have come.
Thanks for the update. yea, right now its just me and my wife. so at most we would use 2 channels if watching something seperately. but having 4 would give us the ability to record up to two shows at the same time too. thank you for that knowledge.
I wonder how it works if managed users have access to the live tv as well.
you need as many tuners as you may want to watch LIVE or RECORDED channels.
if you have 4 channel tuner, then you can watch/record up to 4 different channels.
it doesn’t matter what the mix is, whether its 4 recordings, or 4 live channels or any combination of.
the price difference is generally close enough that there really isn’t any reason to get a 2 tuner box over a 4 tuner box.
keep in mind that most OTA broadcasts use mpeg2 which an older codec and does not direct play on all devices, which may need a powerful enough server to keep up with the number of live tv/recordings happening.
mpeg2 also tends to use a lot of space compared to x264/265.
the hdhr extend, which is generally no longer available new, can convert the mpeg2 to x264 before it hits plex, which can save the extra work on your server, but is limited to 2 tuners.
but unless you have a really old, low powered server, you should be fine with a hdhr quatro
you should start with the live tv/dvr support articles then come back with any other questions you may have.
