Best use of what tech I have to get Plex working

I finally got round to sorting out my LAN , APs, wired network etc and all is hunky dorey. I have a 2013 LG TV in the lounge that works fine and can stream video fine using DLNA from my ageing Synology DS212j. I’m sure I used to have Plex running on it but now no installer works on it.

So, I have a couple of old PCs kicking around, nothing special, maybe 5 year old Intel CPUs with 2GB RAM probably (not even i3s I don’t think), an RPI 2 and my NAS.

I just paid for the Plex premium and want to get the use out of it with what I’ve got. No 4k content, 1080p maximum, serving only a couple of laptops, 1 TV, 1 android TV box, that’s it.

I’m not a novice but middle of the road user with Linux and I can install Linux just fine on any of the old machines and run the server on that box.

Am I just wasting my time with all this, should I just bin the lot and face facts that I need a new NAS enclosure that will work properly? If so what’s the cheapest route for a barebones NAS (preferably Synology I like those!)

Thanks all!

Good morning.

~ First build a 24/7 server rig that has ample, ample HDD space. Standalone
~ Then come back with the specs.
Good luck and lemme know.
