Unable to configure new media Server on macOS High Sierra - Server settings are unavailable message

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6442-5070ad484
macOS 10.13.6 (17G14042)
New media server setup fails to configure server. Setup wizard doesn’t show input fields for name, media library or finish. When I click on next button it just spins; never times out. When this fails I go to Preferences and I can see my new media server, however, Manage > Libraries, Console, Plugins are viewable (missing other necessary configurations). When I click on libraries I get Server settings are unavailable. I have screenshots if needed. Thank you.

See this thread:

Chris that worked like a champ; flawless. My family and I thank you! If you’re ever in San Antonio, Texas, the first drink is on me. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sir, I have one more question about server update request, do I ignore them and for how long? I don’t want to end up in the previous state/condition. Cheers.

My ‘workflow’ for Plex updates has come about after a long period of using Plex. It may not work for everyone. I have three Plex servers in my house. Main, DVR & Test. None of them are set to automatically update. They are all set to “Ask Me”.

The Test one is specifically for experimentation. If I’m really curious about an update I’ll throw it on there and see what happens. That machine can go nuclear and it doesn’t affect me at all. It can easily be rebuilt in a casual day.

The other two I let lag back and watch the forums to see how the new updates are going. But the saving grace for me is that BEFORE I update them, I quit the Plex Media Server app, Control-Click on it in the Applications folder and create a Zip Archive. This creates a backup of a known, working version that I can always roll back to if needed. Then I install the new PMS application to update my server. So each server’s application folder looks like this:

The ‘.app’ version is the current version. The ‘.app.zip’ ZIP archive is the last ‘known good’ version.

As an example, I am in the process of downgrading the DVR server right now. It had been running the 1.30.0 beta without problem. This after the Test server has been running the beta for a couple of weeks incident free. Somehow the DVR server has now got the dreaded “Server Settings are Unavailable” problem. So I’ll quit the current Plex Media Server application (1.30.0 beta), send it to the trash, unzip the last ‘known good’ version (1.29.0) and start it up. Pretty quick rollback. And it instantly fixed the problem.

I also don’t use the built-in update mechanism. I download each update from the Plex downloads page and keep them archived as well.

It ends up being more work on the backend but less work in a problem like I had today.

Glad that link helped! It can be a crisis when your Plex server is non-functional! Have a Happy Holidays!

Chris

P.S. Don’t forget to Heart @nibbles post linked above! A lot of work was put into that and I’ve been handing it out like candy!

Latest on this is that the issue has been identified and a fix will be released - see latest post here Server settings are unavailable after last update. MacOS - #78 by anon18523487

We’ve identified the issue and working on getting a fix out. I don’t have an ETA yet.
