As of this week (and I did update my Android app a few days ago), the Android Auto interface is unable to display:
Long playlists (particularly smart ones based on genre that include hours of music)
Artists list
Recently Added list
I get the spinning wheel of death and then sometimes “No items” message.
Losing the display of long playlists and the Artists and Recently Added lists renders the Android Auto interface of Plex useless to me. I was using those features (particularly long playlists) often.
I have seen mention elsewhere on the web this is a known bug, but I am unable to find a lot of info about this issue tagged with android-auto on this forum. Has anyone been able to fix this problem after experiencing it?
FWIW, my music library is ripped by iTunes and has always had artist folder/album subfolders organization. About 70 GB of music. I have no problems using the features in question in the usual interface of the Android app, the iOS app, or the web interface.
Hi @alanpringle. In order to investigate the issue, would you mind sharing app logs? You can find them in Settings / Help & Support / Debugging/ Share debugging data.
Hi! Sorry to hear you’re experiencing problems with the Android Auto integration. In order to investigate the issue, would you mind sharing app logs? You can find them under Settings / Help & Support / Debugging / Share debugging data.
Did some quick video captures to show my experience. I was not getting these timeouts until I posted earlier this month.
This video shows starting Android Auto without Plex already open. I try to play a long smart playlist containing all songs tagged as Jazz, and it times out. I exit Android Auto and go to the Plex app, and the playlist opens with no problem.
In this video, the playlist is playing in the Plex app, and then I bring up Android Auto. Playlist does continue playing in Android Auto. However, when I try to bring up Artists list in Android Auto, get a timeout.
Even though I’m just using my phone for the screen captures, I get the same behavior when I plug in my phone to my car’s audio unit via USB.
The videos, BTW, are not searchable on YouTube. Have to use links above to see them. Hope they are helpful.
Thanks for pointing me out to those videos, they’re useful indeed. For what I see, infinite spinner is not only happening when loading “main” music section, it seems to happen when loading your playlists/artists/etc, right?
Would you mind grabbing logs right after you see the issue? I’ve checked the ones previously updated but unfortunately I didn’t see anything useful.
In regard to timeouts: they don’t occur on short playlist (60 minutes or so). Do on long smart playlists, Artists list, Recently Added, etc.
Attached logs were pulled right after I started Android Auto and played first songs in two short playlists. And then tried to display Artists and got infinity wheel. plex-log-alanpringle.zip (671.0 KB)
Just chiming in to say that I have the same issue. I have since reverted back to version 7.10.0.8875 and that has solved the issue for me. So something between that update and the latest updates seems to have caused the issue.
@Contragenesis, I just installed same version of the app you mentioned, and sure enough, the problem is solved for me. I will stick with that version until we hear from the Plex folks that the app issue has been resolved. Thank you for the quick fix.
Thanks to you also, @jesusmc, and I hope you can use the info here to pinpoint the change in the app that broke things.
You don’t need to root the phone. Just uninstall plex and install the version referenced above. It works as long as you don’t have auto update enabled in the Google Play Store.
