Unable to get Atmos passthrough with MacOS Sequoia

Server Version#: 1.41.0.8992
Player Version#: Plex for Mac 1.101.0, Plex HTPC 1.67.1

I have MacOS Sequoia installed on an M1 Mac Studio. I confirmed that the Apple TV app outputs Atmos to my receiver with the new HDMI passthrough setting turned on.

When I set up the Plex Player for Mac and Plex HTPC app for Mac to send audio to my receiver via HDMI, and turn on Passthrough for all the audio codec types I cannot get Atmos to passthrough. It’s a Denon receiver and only get MultiCh from the Mac. Even if I try to force Dolby Atmos on the receiver it says “Not Available”. If I play something that has a non-Atmos signal (Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1. etc.) then the passthrough works.

With the new passthrough capabilities of MacOS, how do we get Atmos passthrough to work with Plex? Is a software update to the players needed?

It may be a matter of bitrate. The streaming services do provide Atmos, but it is a lossy version with lower bitrate. The media your trying to play with Plex likely has a bitrate that is too high. DTS-Core 5.1 is 1.5M and had been the highest quality “allowed” until Sequoia. Display info or check media details in Plex and compare them to the bitrate your Denon is seeing from the Atmos on the Apple TV.
