Unable to manually install new package in DSM 7.1 - Invalid file format

I currently have PMS 1.24.1.4931 running in DSM 7.1-42661 Update 1 on a Synology DS220+. I have tried multiple times to manually install an updated version of PMS and every time I get “Invalid file format. Please contact the package developer.” I am downloading the DSM 7 (Intel 64-bit) version of the packages from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads. I have restarted my NAS multiple times and have also shut it down completely but neither of these simple solutions have made any difference.

I’ve tried the following packages and all have failed with the same error:
PlexMediaServer-1.27.0.5849-99e933842-x86_64_DSM7.spk
PlexMediaServer-1.26.2.5797-5bd057d2b-x86_64_DSM7.spk
PlexMediaServer-1.25.9.5721-965587f64-x86_64_DSM7.spk

Anyone have any other ideas of what I can try? Thanks in advance.

I’m not sure if this helps but the file size of my PlexMediaServer-1.27.0.5889-6a2ff9c39-x86_64_DSM7.spk is 109.9 MB NOT 53.8 MB as in your screenshot.

The file length you show is not correct.

The problem you’re facing is how you’re downloading from Plex.tv/downloads.
The browser is not downloading correctly.

  1. Open a terminal session
  2. Look at the directory you’re in, you’ll need to know that.
  3. Copy and paste this into that window
wget https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.27.0.5889-6a2ff9c39/synology-dsm7/PlexMediaServer-1.27.0.5889-6a2ff9c39-x86_64_DSM7.spk
  1. When it finishes, now open Safari and use this file to install with

Interesting. I was using Brave to try and download it and as @ChuckPa pointed out it was not downloading correctly. I did a quick test and Safari had the same issue. What was more interesting was that wget had a read error right around 53mb but it’s smart enough to retry and then fully download the package. Thanks so much for this fix and for helping me get over the frustration of not being able to update my software!

It sounds like you have an issue with your Mac if you’re getting errors at “53 MB” in multiple places
