Unable to play massive 4k bluray rips

Long story short I just finished updating my plex server hardware to a pretty nice setup:

  • Core i5-13500 (hoping for that QuickSync to work)
  • Geforce 1080 (maybe it could help w/ transcoding?)
  • 32GB ram

So its working great, but I have this situation where I want to watch a 4k movie w/ a really nice bitrate, so I have this 81GB copy of interstellar thats amazing, and playing it in VLC either locally and/or via a shared drive is perfectly fine.

But when I load plex up, on a computer and/or tv RIGHT next to the server, it struggles, plex is taking up 60% cpu transcoding, and its constantly pausing. I did make sure I have “original quality” selected.

Why can’t plex just play this?

In Settings → Transcoder, choose the 1080 for the Hardware Transcoding Device.

Plex Media Server supports Intel graphics for transcoding video. However, when running on Windows, Nvidia graphics are required for HDR to SDR tone mapping.

Plex Web cannot direct play 4K HDR media. Use Plex Desktop instead.

TV make & model?
Plex app version?

Need to find out if the movie is transcoding and, if so, why.

When playing the movie on the TV, monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing + Expanded View. It will show if the video or audio is transcoding.

Attach a screenshot of the Dashboard.
