ChuckPA, you are correct. I apologize for going off on a heated tangent, and I hope I didn’t upset you too much. This has been a very difficult week for me even without this Plex-related issue, but I should not have taken it out on you. Is there a way to delete my offending reply?
Thank you for stepping forward. Apologizing is more than enough. Thanks.

Speaking on a personal note myself. My parents are of geriatric age. Both have been in and out of the hospital so much these past 3 weeks that we know all the different teams in the ER, IMCU and ICU. I can relate to ‘very difficult week’ with absolute clarity

Just bumping this issue with the latest update on Android @ChuckPa, I’m unable to play any video files from any of my drives on Android, but via PMP on Linux and Chrome works a charm, so latest update regressed something?? or have I missed something?
Dave
I am seeing this now on my Shield TV as well with the latest version.
@hoby and any others that are having this issue, I’ve cured it by rolling back to an earlier version of Plex on Android which is available on one of the threads.
It definitely seems like a regression, as on my Android 8 Tablet it works great, but seems that anything lower than Android 8, the new player just breaks everything. I hope they sort this issue out before the public release of 7.15 for other Plex users…
Dave
This is extremely unhelpful. You have a number of users complaining about the same issue. Why don’t you take this issue seriously instead of mocking people?
I am having the same issue as well. Again, instead of mocking people, why don’t you contribute in a positive way?
I don’t know if anyone else is still having this issue, but I was seeing a similar issue today with streaming from Android devices to a Chromecast. I noticed some “SSDP: Error parsing device schema” errors in the log, so I decided to disable secure connects for testing - it fixed it.
Settings > Network > set Secure connections to “Disabled”
Must either be an update to the Chromecast or Plex mobile app.
Thanks everyone for your responses! I am glad to see that I am not the only one having this issue!
Unfortunately, I have updated both app (Shield TV) and server, and it did not fix my problem. I was using an old version of the app on my phone and tablet anyway, but I’ll try them again soon.
Playing videos on Chrome has always worked fine for me, even after this issue began. It’s just the 'Droids that aren’t playing ball.
I haven’t tried disabling secure connections yet because doing so would defeat the purpose of keeping Plex at all. I have already switched to another solution that allows me to stream movies and TV shows when I’m on my home network, but not when I’m out and about. The only reason I have kept Plex around for this long is because I hope to (when and if this issue is fixed) be able to stream my stuff from outside my home network as well. Disabling secure connections would defeat the purpose of Plex on my server, as I’m pretty sure that Plex does not allow insecure connections that originate from outside my home network.
And for whatever it’s worth, I personally didn’t find the first part of the response from darcilicious offensive at all, and I’m actually happy to hear that they liked what I had to say. However, I didn’t particularly appreciate the second part, and I can’t say it was particularly productive in contributing to this particular discussion.
I’ll continue to periodically update both app and server and test them to see if the issue gets fixed. I’ll also plan to check this thread from time to time, trying your solutions whenever possible. Even though I have another way to stream my stuff on Shield now, I still miss being able to use Plex both in my apartment and when I’m on the go, and I hope it gets fixed soon.
@pingrobb I think we’re both dreaming of a day that Plex employee’s finally stop smoking something that makes them think that we need “Cool New Features” and finally get their rear ends into gear and fix the issues at hand.
My Android Smartphone is stuck on 7.14.9xxx because of an issue that was introduced from 7.15.xxx and it continues to be an issue in 7.16.xxx, they call it progression… I call it regression and badly thought out and dev’s would be sacked over this if it were any real company wanting to actually make things better.
The only reason I use Plex is to share files around the home and internet to my family, and in my eyes it was the easiest to use over Emby, but the last 2 months or more have now proved a little frustrating for me, and I am now considering dropping Plex altogether in favour for another Media Server…
The player on Android sucks, 7.15.xxx to current version is broken on Android 6 devices and others are experiencing this, and all we get is “Send in the Logs” as if “Guru’s” don’t believe us, and to make us think that it’s our servers and setups…
It’s not just the Android player that sucks big time, the highly touted Live TV/DVR is broken with a badly done EPG system that has missing channels here in the UK even though the channels are transmitting, Onconnect is broken for EPG, why won’t you at Plex see this?
Anyway, that’s off subject, and we need a working Android app, so come on Dev’s shift into gear and lets see how good you really are by fixing something you broke from 7.14.9xx and hasn’t worked since 7.15.xxx to present.
Sorry @ChuckPA after the last couple of months, this is how a once great app to where it is now is making a lot of users including myself feel!!
Dave
If by “Cool New Features” you mean “Web Shows” and “TIDAL integration”, then I definitely share your frustrations! Besides the fact that the Plex app’s basic functions should be fixed before frivolous new features are added to it, I fail to see why a user would need (or even want) these features. Streaming TIDAL, for example, could easily be done directly through the appropriate apps, and using a personal media server as an extra “hop” between TIDAL and a music device would only serve to make streaming slower and put an unnecessary load on the server.
Personally, I find Emby much less frustrating to use because Emby breaks much less frequently than Plex did back when I was still using Plex. The only feature that Emby seems to lack compared to Plex is the ability to use a “relay server” to stream content outside of your home network. So, if you are using Emby now and aren’t stuck behind a firewall, I say go for it! Judging by the amount of time I’ve been waiting for this issue to be fixed, it may be a while before Plex gets back to a semi-working state again.
As much as I’d like to be able to, I haven’t used Plex DVR yet because (as ChuckPA pointed out) I am not yet a paying Plex pass subscriber. I had originally been planning to purchase a Plex pass once I finished paying off my student loans, but I’ve already been seriously reconsidering that plan for several reasons, some of which may already be obvious. Thanks a million for warning me about this feature’s lack of reliability, as you may have just saved me from wasting a huge chunk of my paycheck on a lifetime subscription!
Being a Computer Science major and knowing firsthand how frustrating computer programming can be, the last thing I want to do is criticize the dev team in any way. However, I do wish they would take this issue a little bit more seriously. I am not the only one having this issue, my network and server are clearly not to blame for this issue, and this issue has persisted for much longer than it should have. I know as a pass-less Plex user I’m technically not supposed to be upset, but…good grief!
Okay, it has officially been almost 6 months since I initially posted about this issue, and I also saw an article about Plex on The Verge earlier tonight. Apparently, it’s a bit more popular than I thought! So, I tried updating both the app and the server one last time to see if it would work. I. Am. Still. Unable. To. Play. Media. On. Android. TV. I had initially said to myself that I’d keep trying for at least a year before uninstalling Plex entirely, but given the lack of attention this issue has received from the Plex developers and support team, I am honestly beginning to wonder if Plex for Android will ever be fixed.
I find it truly appalling that such a popular and lucrative streaming platform has failed to fix such a critical flaw in its Android app. Emby works just fine on the same server and the same Android TV device, so the Plex support team has no excuse for trying to blame me or my networking devices. If this issue does not get fixed, I will be forced to abandon the Plex streaming platform entirely, and with it, my hopes and dreams of purchasing a Plex pass someday. I am both disappointed and angered by the way this issue has been handled.
I’m surprised it’s been going on for this long… No hold on this is Plex, every bug takes forever to fix!! I’ve all but given up on the EPG and live TV side of Plex now, to concentrate my energies on this. I’ve been getting this issue also and added my voice to a thread but @sixones insisted that because it was a thread for Fire Sticks and the problem was the same as Fire Sticks etc are based on Android I was to start my own new thread… Where has it got me? NOWHERE FAST!!
I’ve been getting the "Plex has lost server connection on my Android Smartphone since 7.15.xxx which has forced me to downgrade to 7.14.99x which works great. I would like to know if @elan actually thinks this is acceptable to keep users in the dark and to just keep creating “cool new features” instead of fixing ones that need fixing first. I’m beginning to regret purchasing the Lifetime Pass since the screw up with both the Android app and the Live TV EPG fiasco, this needs to be fixed
Got my Android Plex tablet fixed by disabling extra audio output format under: settings - advanced - player - optional audio support (I’ve translated it so something like those steps).
I’ve unchecked the ‘EAC3’, restarted the Plex app and all files can be played again without the remote server blabla.
Steven, I want to try this out to see if it works. Can you tell me which version of the Plex app and Plex media server you are using? If this will indeed fix my issue, I want to be 100% sure I reproduce what you did verbatim so I can finally get Plex working again.
I have the exact same problem that started out of the blue! I am running 7.24.3.13830 on my Shield Pro. Plays music but unable to play video files!!
Hi there, @MontyTheLab. Today, the same thing occurred to me with the same Plex Player version (7.24.3.13830). So, to solve this “problem”, I’ve downgraded the Plex Player to a version that was working before: in my case, version (7.23.0.13123). And, as a safe zone, I’ve disabled the “auto update apps” feature in my android TV - until this problem is solved by the devs.
I have the same problem.
I have an Android TV as well and since the 7.24.3.13830 update, none of my media is working on my wired home network.
How did you downgrade the Plex app on your android TV?
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: FIXED!
Turns out my plex server was on 1.13.0.5023 and was not auto-updating. I shut down plex. Downloaded the newest version (1.18.2.2029) - it automatically rebuilt the libraries and it worked! Hope this helps others!
Just linking in this NVIDIA Shield: "Unable to play media" when all other clients can stream with no issue had the same symptoms and same solution roughly the same time.
I have yet to Upgrade PMS however Rolling back PMC works so i suspect it will be the same solution.
Hi, @logikol. I’ve made a backup of the Plex Player app some time ago just to be safe - and, in this moment, I was correct to do it. So, I unninstalled the Plex Player version (7.24.3.13830) and reinstalled the Plex Player version (7.23.0.13123). I think there is, in the forum, someone linking for a working version install - just install the version type for your OS.
@Onextw, I think there is something here: if @logikol had to upgrade the PMS to have access, I haven’t upgraded - but I downgraded the Plex Player app to make it work - and you solved the same way… Probably - I mean: probably - the app version has some kind of GET communication with our older PMS version (I think they haven’t dropped support to our old PMS, since it works without a problem in my smartphone, 64-bit version (7.24.3.13830), but it has a problem with the same version in my Android TV, 32-bit (7.24.3.13830)).
I think its also worth noting (for those of us not yet ready to update PMS) that the Plex Client Ap Updates daily, So you have to roll it back every day.
