Unable to set/change username

Player Version#: Web 4.41.1

Hello - I am trying to set the user name (Settings > Account > Username) in the web UI.
One user (initial, admin) cannot change it, another new user cannot set it at all.
It doesn’t give an error, just reloads the page as it was on submit.
Any ideas?

This is happening for me, too. When I load app.plex.tv, click my account picture in the upper-right corner, then click Account, I’m brought to a page where I can change my username. When I change it and click ‘Save’, the page reloads, but the username has not changed.

I also tried going to plex.tv, clicking My Account, then Settings, but it brought me to the same place. The behavior is the same. I tried both Safari 13.1.2 and Firefox 80.0 on macOS 10.15.6.

I am the owner of the server and have a Lifetime Plex Pass. I’m not sure if it matters, but my server is running the latest beta, version 1.20.1.3252. Thanks for taking a look!

Update: I tried accessing that page directly via my server’s IP address, and it actually gave me an error message. It said:

An unknown error occurred

Below that, it also said:

Username - username has already been taken

I didn’t see any indication that this username needed to be unique across the entirety of Plex, as this username is definitely not in use on my own server.

Since email addresses already have to be unique for Plex accounts, it’d be great if this restriction could be lifted. If not, a clearer error message would really help here. Thanks!

But this is the case. The Administrator’s (read: server owner) user name is your plex.tv account and therefore needs to be unique among all plex.tv accounts.

It’s also possible to sign in using your username. Imagine if 2 users with the same username somehow had the same password. You’d be unknowingly accessing someone else’s account.

The main confusion comes from no error message showing up on the web interface. As mentioned in the original post the page simply reloads with no visible changes so how is the user to know if it’s a duplicate name or another problem. Please fix this. Thanks.

I’ve only ever logged into Plex using my email address, so I didn’t realize my username would work, too. Neat, I guess, but kind of limiting if I can’t change how my username displays in my own Plex server. Maybe a separate “display name” that’s only used for my own server would help. I could see that being hard to support, though.

Regardless, this could use an error message - preferably a realtime check to let you know that your chosen username has already been claimed, before you submit the page.

I may have figured this out… Kinda. I was running into the same error until i placed a symbol in the username. Started with an @ then tried a couple other symbols and it all worked. Strange.

Edit: I tried the symbols on the 1-10. Not sure about the others.
