Unable to use relay, how to troubleshoot?

Server Version#: 1.41.9.9961
Player Version#: Any version of web and iOS

I have a lifetime plex pass and a need to use plex relay to access music. My server is behind CGNAT and has no trouble accessing the internet, and Settings > Network > Enable Relay is enabled. My clients however (web, Plex and Plexamp for iOS) show my server as offline and unreachable for any kind of media when I’m on my cellular connection. I feel like relay should “just work” so I’m at a loss on how to troubleshoot. Could my carrier (T-Mobile US) be blocking access to the relay servers?

A couple of things:

  1. Even though you’re in a configuration where your ISP doesn’t allow it, you still need to have remote access enabled (even it shows that it’s not connected). Relay relies on it being enabled to signal your intent to allow remote connections.
  2. For the new experience iOS app in particular, you may need to go to Settings → Advanced and select “Reset Cache.” It seems to remember whether or not remote access was enabled for some reason. Resetting the cache causes it to retry.

But yes, assuming remote access is enabled, Plex relay should “just work.”

(Bearing in mind that the new experience app doesn’t support music at this time.)

#1 was the issue. I didn’t have remote access enabled since I assumed that was for direct connections only. Relay is working perfectly now. Thanks!

You’re welcome, glad you got it working!
