Ok. If the server is completely off, and I try to add users to account, I can. But as I add, they disappear. So again I wonder what is up with my account, and is it really my server…

EDIT: I will say it appears if I claim my server with a different account (I have two different Plex passes), the users appear to stay put… but that is preliminary observation at this point.

EDIT2: Remember above how this seemed to start with me trying a beta release and that release having a lot of bugs. Is there ANY way that release somehow, I don’t know, messed up my account on the Plex side on Plex’s servers?

There are no updates coming in:

Look at how slow the database is getting. (“SLOW QUERY”)
Either the DB itself is going out of whack or something else is really slowing down I/O to the DB

There is nothing logical in that unless there are tasks running on the Linux host which are messing with Preferences or the databases

No cloud sync turned on, I literally have changed nothing at the OS or Plex level when all this started happening besides perhaps an upgrade to a beta version

I am keeping my fingers crossed, but it appears I have achieved some level of stability by claiming the server with a completely different Plex pass. Why would this cause everything to be more stable (keep server claimed, no vanishing users, etc.)?

I imagine slow databse is just Plex trying to bring in all the stuff I have added over the last month, and there is some network latency (or some latency) as different servers (NASs) spin up.

The pessimist in me would assert that someone has your password and is “screwing with you”. How else would things fail while running but be completely stable on a different account ?

This screwing-with-me-person would have to be constantly monitoring my activity, knowing exactly when I’m adding users, and unclaiming my server. I mean like when I add a user, they disappear sometimes in seconds. Whether I’m doing this at 3am or 3pm. And somehow they would have to be guessing all my constant password changes too. And I have even changed my PIN on top of all that.

I have thought of this explanation too, but it just seems so… unlikely.

It appears my experience in all this is sui generis though (per Google searches).

Unfortunately, the unclaimed server and disappeared users problem returns even with a totally new account and Plex pass.

You mentioned preferences.xml…

Just a thought: completely wipe out the browser history of all web browsers which have been used to access your plex account.

I’d also check every bookmark and shortcut leading to plex.tv, for additional URl parameters and then remove them all until only the pure https://app.plex.tv remains

Disable all web browser extensions you might have installed for the domains plex.tv and plex.direct

A VERY WEIRD EPILOGUE

For the benefit of any other Plex user this might ever happen to, I will now spin a strange tale of a deleted movie and an escalation in VERY weird Plex behavior that has been quite… the ride. Read on!

About three weeks ago, the wife and I were watching ‘Burning’ (the recent Korean movie). It’s in 4K. Over the previous couple of weeks, I had gone through the process of adding ASS subs to every 4K HDR movie that needed subs in my library. The reason is, for my setup, PGS subs do not burn into 4K->1080p transcodes smoothly… but ASS does.

I don’t know if ASS had anything to do with anything, but one night, while watching ‘Burning,’ I paused the movie. In a couple minutes, I came back to restart it and there was an error. So I exited all the way out of Plex, came back in… and the movie was gone. I was like “wut?” I searched the whole library but it was really and truly gone.

Fortunately, I keep backups. So I got the backup off the backup server, loaded it back up in the real library, and continued to watch the movie. Then I went to bed.

The next morning, I was messing around in Plex and noticed “Hey ‘Burning’ is gone again!” So I re-added it in the library. Then, as soon as I would add it and scan the library… it would delete! No other item in my library had been deleted (and I can thoroughly check all ~8000 movies). The only way I could keep ‘Burning’ as a title was to turn off media deletion option in settings. The moment I would turn it on, ‘Burning’ would disappear.

So I chalked all this up to some weird Plex behavior. And thought nothing more of it for many many days.

Then a couple weeks later I go to watch something on Plex… and the whole server is gone. It is unclaimed. Alright I think this sometimes happen. So I reclaim the server. Then a few hours later I see the server is unclaimed again.

This would happen daily for many days, and always would happen after I went to bed for sure. I would just reclaim the server in the morning.

The thing that became really upsetting, as you can see in many of my posts above, is my Plex Home user list began auto-deleting after a server reclaim. Then it got to where I would be adding users back and they would literally disappear right before my eyes as I was adding them. And this was after I would say about 10 to 15 consecutive and quick password changes on my part.

And I begin thinking, well, what if I just use a whole new Plex Pass account. I have a spare one I used several years ago for testing. So I put the server on an entirely new and different account. All seemed well for about a day… and then the server started unclaiming again. And not being able to keep users again. WTF!!! right???

Then I did more researching. I came across this article.

It mentioned something in there about 2FA.

Well, ever since I added 2FA to my account… the new Plex Pass account… the server has been OK. It seems pretty stable, no unclaims, no lost users, etc.

So in summary, if you experience anything like I have, I suggest trying two-factor authentication on your account.

EPILOGUE of EPILOGUE:
For my original Plex Pass account, the one I changed passwords on about a hundred times, after I switched the server over to a new account I tried logging back into the old account just for this forum on a different web browser. I could not get my password to work. I tried password reset a hundred times… no dice. I contact Plex Pass billing support. They told my account had been canceled!!! How this happened, I honestly have no idea. I have now reclaimed the original account.

And 'Burning"? I checked it an hour ago. It was again deleted by the server. All other movies intact. So… we shall see.
