Unclear after reading docs, does watch together have everyone stream from one server?

Saw the watch together update today and got it. We are curious on how it works for everyone, with regards to where the media plays from. My friend and I have the same content on our respective servers. Will it play for each of us from our local server or will it stream from whichever user/server starts the party?

It has to use the same source video from one source. It’s not about who starts it, but where the media is located that’s selected for the session.

Thanks for the speedy answer! So even though we both have it, it will still force a stream rather than use the local? Hmmm. Not the solution I was quite hoping for, any plans to expand it to be able to play the local copy for each person if they have a copy?

Also, some of the wording leaves it open to question, which is how I arrived here. : )

That’s unlikely. Say there are small differences in the file, one is shorter/longer, a different edit, etc. The best way to keep people in sync is ensuring everyone has the same source

But sometimes the two person can have the exactly same video from the same source.
In my case since the quarantine,Im watching with my boyfriend , we sync saying 1,2,3 play and talking over hangout.
We have lower/bad internet connection to stream in the cloud.
And cloud can have it own interference that we cant handle and can cause out.sync for each person.

At this time, we only support using the one source file. If your internet connection cannot support remote streaming, and you need to play separate files, then at this point in time, this may not be the solution for your use case :man_shrugging:
