"unexpected error" after enabling custom filters

Server Version#:1.18.0.1846
Player Version#:1.3.1.916-1cb2c34d

Using Plex for Windows. In a TV Show Library, I switched the view from Shows to Episodes, then enabled custom filters. This resulted in the “Unexpected Error” page almost immediately. Because that view is now remembered by the client, I can no longer access my TV show libraries, as it instantly tries to load the custom filters and returns the “Unexpected Error” page. Resetting customization didn’t fix the issue. Reinstalled the app with no success either.

EDIT: Was able to restore access by resetting all settings from debug menu. Guess I’m not using custom filters from this app for a while… :slightly_frowning_face:

I ran into the same thing with my movies library. Thanks for the debug menu tip. I was getting very frustrated.

Thanks!
Had the same problem. Uninstalled, removed the appdata folder for plex and reinstalled. Same problem. Web player worked fine.

Thanks to your suggestion, all is ok again.

Oh, I also noticed under the movie libraries, under the dropdown that normally has “All” selected (unless being filtered), seems to be missing the “Duplicates” filter, which is still in the webplayer…
Also custom filters still seem to work on the webplayer.

Same issue but with my music library, thanks for posting your fix

Glad my solution worked for you guys. The number of bugs I’m running into recently between Plex for Windows and the Android app has been pretty frustrating :slightly_frowning_face:

Thanks for the fix, had the same problem on Mac.

I can confirm this is happening to me as well. Custom filters make the entire library unusable (throws an immediate error). Only way to find things afterward is via search (or, I presume, resetting all settings via the debug menu as mentioned and avoiding the Custom filters)

Thanks for the fix, gitch. I’m sure they’ll push an update out soon.

I believe this issue is fixed in the next release for both Mac and Windows; should be available soon-ish but not before the weekend.

That’s good to hear. I wish the other two issues I reported got some attention but it would appear that no one with any pull has batted an eye in regards to them, which is frustrating when the forums are pushed as the primary medium for support.

The Android app has many issues with music. While the staff are tackling some of them, the biggest hurdle seems to be getting good reproducible bug reports.

How do I define that?

  1. Plex Pass users testing against the current Android beta,
  2. Making one new topic for each of their own issues per beta,
  3. With samples, logs, and steps to reproduce
  4. posted in the correct players-beta forum

Before you imply staff doesn’t care, consider two things: how you could make a better bug report, and how you would like to read 200 forums posts a day.

  1. I’ve only reported one music related issue

  2. I’m not trying to imply that staff doesn’t care at all, but it’s hard to look at various factors including:

  • The backlog of bugs that have been around for years with no updates or feedback
  • The smorgasbord of features that have been added recently
  • The number of posts both here and on reddit expressing disinterest in some (admittedly not all) of those features
  • Seeing with increasing frequency discussions of a more critical nature being shut down with “its not going to happen so stop talking about it”-type responses

Those factors, especially when considered in conjunction with each other, say a lot.

I’m not trying to make blanket statements about how much each and every staff member cares, but there’s no denying the changes that plex (both the software and the team) has undergone in the last few years and how that’s affected Plex’s relationship with its userbase, and someone seriously needs to take a step back and take a long hard look at it. Likewise, I’m not excusing all the negative user comments I’ve seen here recently, but you have to acknowledge that that doesn’t just start to happen for no reason.

I have this same issue… Is resetting all of my settings the only way to fix this? That’s rather unfortunate.

as it was stated the update to fix this is coming out “soon-ish”, you could always just ditch the desktop client for now and stick with the web client until the fix is released. Otherwise if you need access via the desktop client now, then yes, afaik, the only way to fix the issue is to reset the settings via the debug menu. I tried a dozen other things with no success.

This should be addressed in our 1.4 release.

You can download a preview build here: Plex for Windows and Plex for Mac forum preview releases. The 1.4 release updated some fundamental libraries. It’s baking a bit longer than usual to ensure there’s no issues in hiding.

Trying to find the debug menu…

…and found it ten seconds later.

I also had this issue after trying to create a filter on my library. I uninstalled and the issue persisted.

Thank you for the tip about “Restore Defaults” via Settings -> PLEX --> Debug --> Restore Defaults. That worked, though I’m not sure what I now need to reconfigure. Everything seems the same.

I’m having this issue currently and the debug restore defaults isn’t working for me. Server is up to date and I just installed the windows plex app today (didn’t take me long to find the bug I guess).

See the post above:

Download and install the Preview release.
