I record off HDHomerun Extend boxes. They take the ATSC h262/AC3 and transcode it to h264/AC3
e.g.
Stream #0:0[0x100]: Video: h264 (High) ([27][0][0][0] / 0x001B), yuv420p(tv), 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], Closed Captions, 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc
Stream #0:10x101: Audio: ac3 ([129][0][0][0] / 0x0081), 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), fltp, 384 kb/s
When I play it on my Roku, PMS insists on trans-coding the audio to AAC. It will direct play the h264
My TV understands AC3, not AAC. My Roku reads this from my TV and will only output PCM Stereo or Dolby Digital (AC3). After all, my TV is also an ATSC receiver. When the audio is transcoded to AAC my Roku box has to transcode it back to AC3 so my TV can understand. The transcoding is unnecessary, wasteful, and not needed.
Would ‘Roku > Settings > Audio’ settings make a difference? I would think that you would need to [specifically] set Roku for Dolby Digital or DTS pass-through (rather than ‘Auto’) to prevent PMS from transcoding to AAC. I too record with HDHomeRun Extend boxed and have a couple of Rokus. I have to run some tests to see if PMS is indeed transcoding the audio. I’ll report back once I have a chance to run some tests.

It is set to auto. It picks up the EDID from the HDMI on the TV as Stereo and Dolby Digital (aka AC3). The playback shows the stream as a 10.3 Mbps h264 video (from the Extend trans-code) and the Audio of AC3. If I take the Roku off auto and implicitly tell it to do Dolby Digital, then PMS does not tans code the AC3.
I believe this is a bug in the PMS server that sees the EDID come back as Stereo and DD. PMS then defaults to the lower setting, forcing a trans-code of the audio to AAC. And, as a note, it is still trans-coding AC3 to AC3 and h264 to h264 unnecessarily.
@Torxbit I am having the exact same problem and it is using a LOT of resources on my linux server. My audio receiver is receiving the signal from my Roku as Dolby Digital or DTS from the content but Plex Server is still transcoding “DCA to AAC” this never happened before. This is definitely a bug. Can someone from Plex please assist or help???
