unRAID: Question regarding PlexPass version of Plex

Hi all!  I'm JonP from Lime Technology, and I wanted to ask how Plex would like us to handle support for their app going forward inside of a Docker Container we are managing for our users on unRAID 6.  I'll skip the details and jump right to the meat and potatoes of the matter:

Using Docker, users can download a container with Plex directly to their unRAID system.  The container uses an image that already has the free version of Plex installed into it.  However, our users have been asking us to also support use of a container that has the PlexPass version of the software.  Our concern is that since PlexPass isn't made available as a public download from the Plex site, but rather, only after you've logged in with a valid PlexPass account, that for us to do this, we would be circumventing your licensing or something along those lines.  Would that be true?

In short, how should we as a developer incorporate support for the use of the PlexPass version of Plex on unRAID, where application updates are performed at the container level, not the application level (when you release a new version of Plex, we'd release a new version of the container that contains the new version of Plex; no in-app updates required).

In addition, because we have recently released unRAID 6.0.0 final, we'd eventually like to ask that the link to download the txz file for unRAID be replaced with a link to a guide I will publish on how to use the Container we've included with unRAID.  Who should I contact to coordinate this?

Thanks again for all you guys do!  Plex is my favorite app to use on unRAID and we look forward to improving support for Plex for our users on unRAID 6!

I will link this to the appropriate plex employees :)

I'm interested in this too.
I just noticed that there's a newer version for Plex Pass members right now and the unRAID Plex Docker template only loads the "public" version.
In the old Phaze plug-in on unRAID 5.x, you can put in your Plex Pass account info and it will download the latest Plex Pass version.

I just use the needo docker which gets the plexpass version

Hope the devs have helped you out. I haven't started using docker yet solely bc my Plex works just fine with the old plugin system, but man official Plex docker support would get me to move over.

just moved from needos repo to official limewire repo and plex installs without error and grabs plex pass version now as well

@marklight

docker is stable versions ago and works just great.

went from phaze plugins to docker without much knowledge and found it to be easy.

Does it?  Neither this thread nor the thread on limetech http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=40654.45have been updated to suggest it has been updated to grab the plexpass version, are you sure it's not just grabbing the latest ( non plexpass ) version, which might be further confused by the fact it looks like both the plexpass version and non plexpass version are the same at the moment?

The only reason it's pulling the 'PlexPass' version is because the PlexPass and Public versions are currently the same.  The code has not been changed other than to remove references to plexpass.

With Docker, you have the ability to drop into the limetech Plex docker container and install whatever version of PMS you want from command-line right?

When PMS is updated, won't users need to do that to upgrade anyway? I've only minimally played with Docker on Ubuntu. I see what JonP is saying above about how limetech would just release a new container... but how does that impact the PMS db you've built? Is the db just left untouched while the container upgrade only overwrites specific files (PMS)?

With Docker, you have the ability to drop into the limetech Plex docker container and install whatever version of PMS you want from command-line right? Just do a wget of the PP version and install?

Also, I've only minimally played with Docker on Ubuntu and never any container "updates". I see what JonP is saying above about how limetech would just release a new container when a new PMS version comes out... but how does that impact the PMS db you've built in the original container? I guess you're not overwriting the entire container? Is the db just left untouched while the container upgrade only overwrites specific files (PMS)?

Any updates on this?

Just an FYI, when you pull the txz file from the website my plugin will no longer be able to download a suitable install for plex thus breaking it for many unraid users. If it isn’t too much trouble perhaps the txz files could also remain along side the instructions for docker on unraid?
