At the moment I have 2 computers running at home.
My unraid server with intel i5-14500 CPU which has a Intel UHD 770 iGPU
and
My Gaming Computer that has a AMD Ryzen 7800x3d and a RTX 3090.
I thought about making a fusion of these 2 computers to save space, energy consumption and because I like to tinker and tweak stuff and try out new things.
My plan is: selling the Intel CPU, Board and RAM and the 7800x3d CPU.
I plan to keep the ASUS Motherboard of the gaming computer because it has 10G networking onboard and just put a CPU with more cores on it. That would be the 7950x3d. I need more cores because on the unraid server there are lots of docker containers running. a small ubuntu VM and I plan to setup a windows VM for Gaming on it.
The gaming VM should have 16 cores like i have at the moment with the 7800 x3d so I’d thought the 7950x3d would be enough since I then have 16 cores/threads left for the other tasks the server is doin. (docker ubuntu etc.)
Virtualization the gaming computer would bring me nice features like snapshots of the machines etc. and I can easily jump to a different VM for testing different linux distributions etc. maybe I even switch away from windows to endeavorOS.
I just created a new unraid stick and tested the AMD 7800x3d if HW transcoding works with it on the official PMS docker container.
It worked but contrary to my intel CPU the CPU utilization was much higher than on the intel. It was running between 20-30% instead of max 10% when the intel cpu was transcoding anything.
Does anyone have experience how many transcodes the AMD CPU in these CPU can do at the same time ?
At the moment I have 2-3 users that access my server max at the same time (brother, mom and friends) Since my internet connection just has 50 MBit upload a lot of the files will get transcoded to 1080p outside of my network. But I have a lot of 4k material on the server. So far no one had any issues when the intel CPU was transcoding 4k material. The only bottleneck was basically my upload speed.
I also thought about just upgrading to a 14900k to get more cores but I have read that the the intel top CPUS have much problems at the moment. And also the power consuption of the AMD CPUs is much lower.
