Server Version#:v1.23.0.4459
Player Version#:8.19.3.26377
OK, so earlier today I made this post about file permission troubles, and was able to get that figured out. I copied over essentially every database backup I had, and now PMS refuses to start at all. From looking at the Play store, PMS updated July 2nd, which is just after my last database backup. I am assuming all of those backups are in the 1.22x format, not the newer 1.23x.
So how are we to fix database incompatibilities between the two versions?
Or would it be better for me to uninstall PMS 1.23 and reinstall 1.22 and then copy the db files over? (would that even work?)
I’ve had to completely delete and re-create my library more than once and I really REALLY do not want to do that again!
Plex will automatically update the database schema… that’s one of the first things the server checks when you start it. The logs will show entries about “forward migrating” the schema – if there’s been a major update, that can take quite a number of iterations.
Long story short: your server not starting should not be caused by that. So jumping back and forth between different versions of PMS won’t do you much good.
As for the actual issue: a look at those server logs of yours could show more details.
Yeah, I should know better than continue working on something when I’m hangry. Last night, just after posting this, I uninstalled PMS and Plex Player and side installed older APKs and thought I could just copy the backup db’s over (I did have the presence of mind to backup the Databases and Database Backups folders off to the side before doing anything). So right now I’m having to setup Plex again, which as you said likely won’t fix the issue. Right now it’s refusing to move the data to my USB stick, which prolly means I need to format it.
I should have just shut it down and went to bed, but oh well, hindsight and all that …
I’m attaching a zipped copy of my logs. I’m not sure if that will help, but at some point I’ve got to work on this thing and get it back up and running. Logs.zip (5.0 MB)
Based on your logs, the server seems to be working mostly ok.
The logs end yesterday 13:46 your time – not sure if that’s when you pulled those logs or if the server actually got stuck. If it got stuck after that, the next restart attempt isn’t even making it into the logs… usually you should at least get a few lines stating it cannot start and some related errors.
Beyond that… there’s a few network timeouts and errors when your server is too busy for its own good and some processes need to wait while another transaction locked the database. None of those seem to be actually throwing your server off.
Yeah it’s no longer running. I may have to just uninstall again, reinstall, and go from there. Any chance I could take one of the backup dbs and just copy it over once I get it back up and running?
In theory you should be able to move the configuration/install – however from what I’ve been reading it’ll be a bit more complicated on the Shield (I suppose you’ll need to move the data directory to an external drive, move/rename that while the server is shut down, re-install the server and then move the old folder/database back while the server is stopped again).
The key question will be what’s causing your server to stop. If it’s something about the server configuration it might not be ideal to copy your old data directory/database.
By the way, @tom80H thank you for responding and helping me with this! I greatly appreciate it!
So I reinstalled PMS and set it up as a new server. Moved the data to my USB stick. Then stopped the server and copied over my database backups from June 20th (which were the earliest backups). Restarted the server and Plex is running!
All of my thumbnails/posters are blank. I didn’t even think of whether or not I should have backed those up. I also lost my plugins, but I have those backed up on a separate drive and will reinstall them later.
Which is better to fix the blank posters? Just force a refresh of all metadata? Or just delete all the thumbnails then re-enable them?
Disk I/O errors don’t usually refer to a corrupted database.
This looks more like an issue with your storage. According to your logs Plex is having issues downloading some album covers
