Update to how Plex scan works // mod: show running/remaining time for scan

Hi

I just did a full rebuld on my plex server as i needed to do a clean install of my nas, and everything is working great.
But one thing i would love to have is a way to tell how far through a scan is going.

Atm the only way I can tell a scan is running is by looking at this.

Can you add a way to know how far though a scan is running and maybe a timmer?

Mines been running for 2 days so far doing theintro detection and if I could tell haow much longer it got I wouldnt need to keep checking it.

I guess an ETA (how much time is left to finish the scan) is tricky…

  • The duration of the actual scan is hard to predict as Plex is only checking the files in your library folder(s) while it’s performing the scan – however as you probably noticed that part is relatively fast.
  • The duration for creating thumbnails or detecting intros can vary depending on the media. While thumbnail generation is “just some simple image processing”, the video resolution/quality will have an impact and add up as you’re scanning tons of stuff.

Personally I’m ok with the current progress indicator. But that’s not to say there’s no use case / demand for what you’re asking for. Let’s see if / how much attention this suggestion will get :wink:

If your focus is solely on the thumbnail/preview generation… there’s already an existing feature suggestion aiming at just that. In that case you might want to comment/vote in that existing thread in order to avoid distracting votes/attention.

I hate made-up progress bars, and I know that estimating remaining time is always hard.

It would be nice to have a sense of outstanding tasks, though. There are a variety of tasks that Plex performs. Some display the current active task, but with no sense of how many tasks there are outstanding. Some aren’t made visible in the Activity or Dashboard areas at all.

The way Sonic Analysis works is pretty nice. It shows the number of outstanding albums, and counts down as progress is made.

Something similar would be nice to have for Video Preview Thumbnail generation, for Intro Detection, for Deep Analysis, etc.

The orange circle is already serving as a progress indicator.

Yes, for the currently active task.

But - for instance, from OP’s screenshot - how many more VPT generation tasks are there? One more episode? 20? 2000?

Yes if it can work out how many task it needs to complete before starting and just give a % or 1 out of 2000 tasks. atm my scan is still running lol

and who knows how far through it is its not doing it alphabeticaly so I just have to wait

I believe on the line labeled Dashboard an entry to the far right displaying current progress as a whole. Something like “Completed 000.0%”. My circling icon has been going for two days with no end in sight. I am hoping by tomorrow.
