Current plex server is running Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS. Hardware is i3 2.4 ghz with 32gigs of ram and a very old cheap video card and will not transcode 4k video.
New server will be recycling a older computer I have it will be running Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS. on a Intel® Core™ i9-10900K Processor, 64gigs of ram and a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5
FYI we mostly stream to Roku ultras and Roku TVs. Music mostly to phones.
Anyone, have any tips, tricks they wold like to share to get the best performance?
I Will look into that. As for the card its in the new system and no point in removing it same with the ram. I do run a few other thing on the machine from time to time so the card and ram wont hurt. Current System is running a 1TB HD the new system is going onto Samsung 870 500g SSD as the boot drive. All the movies are currently stored on a 16TB HD, Music is split between mine and wife’s music. 8TB and 6 TB each. Those drives will be installed on the new plex sever. I back up it all to a dedicated NAS along with all the other computers at home.
Forgot the new server will have a 2.5g nic vs the 1g nic in the old one. My home network is running a 2.5g switch though all the Rokus and what not are wifi or 1g nics so not sure that will help much.
the GT1070 is a little bit older but still very viable. (especially with 8GB of RAM)
The 10th gen GPU in that i9 is a winner.
After you install the nvidia-drivers (Ubuntu has a predefined group which grabs everything), after rebooting, you’ll be able to use either the QSV or the Nvidia.
8GB of DDR5 is impressive. You’ll run out of CPU on audio transcodes before you run out of Nvidia GPU power.
ChuckPa: Thanks, yes I am trying to get a plex server that will handle most if not all my needs. I may hit you back on any Ubuntu tweeks you might suggest for plex optimization when it comes to hardware. Honestly, the last system was a old windows based NVR system I wiped and installed Ubuntu and plex on to get something up and running and my wife and kids (me to) have loved plex so much I wanted to get a much better hardware setup but have not wanted or had the extra cash for a new build/system. Then About two weeks ago I put together my new home office computer and was like well what the heck to do with this old computer. and though HEY all he hardware is good.and it looks like it should/would make a good plex server. So, here I am.
