I’m currently looking into making the switch over to Plex Amp from Spotify and can’t seem to find a clear answer. My account was made before the cutoff for Plex Pass benefits to be shared with users who also had accounts made before the cut off but I don’t have Plex Pass. If I upgrade to Plex Pass now is my account still considered to be grandfathered in?
There is no such cutoff.
You may be thinking of the changes in March 2025, where Plex adjusted Plex Pass features & pricing and introduced the Remote Watch Pass (Important 2025 Plex Updates).
Edit: You might also be thinking of Downloads. However, that does not apply to streaming music with Plexamp.
Plex Documentation → Remote Access & Granting Library Access → Requirements for Remote Playback of Personal Media
Streaming music remotely with Plexamp does not require a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass
From Requirements for Remote Playback of Personal Media: The remote playback restrictions do not apply to streaming music content to Plexamp or photos to our Plex Photos app.
You should be able to share your music libraries with others, who can stream remotely using Plexamp.
Suggest the following:
- Make sure you can stream locally with Plexamp.
- Enable remote access (if not already enabled).
- Make sure you can stream remotely with Plexamp.
- Then share music libraries with others.
You may also want to create a second “test” Plex account using a free e-mail account (Google, Yahoo, AOL, etc.). You can then use that account to test streaming remotely. It will give you a feel for how your friends experience streaming from your server.
Note 1: If you wish to stream video remotely to yourself or to friends, then a Plex Pass or Remote Watch pass is required. See the Requirements document linked above and Plex Subscriptions for additional details.
Note 2: A Plex Pass enables additional Plexamp features. See https://www.plex.tv/plexamp/.
