Upload media content via web interface

One of the reasons I have struggled to get friends and family to embrace Plex as their media solution at home is due to the fact there is no 'easy' way of adding content.  By easy I mean by using something they are all already familiar with, ie a simple 'file upload' web based control.  Currently I have managed to get people to successfully rip content using MakeMKV or to download from other sources on their laptops, but the inability for them to then get this content onto their Plex server (which runs on a NAS) means they don't use it.  Instead they watch content directly on their laptops from the download folder using VLC.

As simple as it may sound, even trying to explain how to copy files from Finder / Explorer to a network drive (which has to be re-connected each time) seems too difficult and if Plex had a way of offering an 'upload' facility within each Section (Movies / TV etc) I think it would provide the perfect solution for many people who have trouble with the concept of a 'network share' etc.

Either that or maybe I have a particularly stupid group of family members and friends ;-)

I support your idea of having the possibility to use the Plex WebApp to upload content to the server. It would indeed be a great addition to the functionality of the WebApp in hindsight to ... well lets say not so very well tech-accustomed users.

Although I must note, I'm using the Plex Server at my little HomeServer (Windows Server 2008R2) and generally use a FTP connection to transfer new content, which is very handy and effectively prevents others to upload unwanted content.

Therefore I strongly recommend to only allow uploads from authorised users. As well as the option for the admin to authorise the uploaded content itself.

Let's say the admin is ablo to set certain restriction like size ind filetype of the content which could be uploaded by users and has the option authorise content uploaded to the server before it is archived and displayed by the server on the dashboard.

In short, a Web-based upload functionality which can (optionaly) be supervised by a server admin.

Many duplicates of this feature request have been closed, but the solution (https://forums.plex.tv/topic/125642-uploading-media-files-to-server/) goes to a 404. Could someone please post the correct link?

This is not a solution, but a link to a duplicate request thread which has been closed since because it is … a duplicate.

Thanks for clarifying. Where is the open feature request for this please?

the open request to support direct upload of media via web interface? → HERE (=this thread)

Any news about this?

This does not appear to be a complicated feature to implement, IMHO… Or am I wrong?

Hello,
I think this is the right place to bring this up, but if its not, I’m sure someone will let me know.
As the subject line suggests, I was thinking it would be helpful to have a way to transfer a file or files on one devide using plex, to a local server, logged in with the same account via LAN.
I use my computer I have running my home server to aquire or “rip” A/V, I just transfer it via external drive of somesort now and then as I get more. That means I have to copy it to a thumb/external drive then go downstairs to my server, set up keyboard/display/mouse, plug it in, wait for it to copy over, erase the transfer disc, then run the library scans, and wait for metadata, etc. Its not a super big inconvenience and can be done other ways of course, but it would just be easier, especially if I used a new device, or one that I may never use again. I don’t want to have to set up a secure file transfer method if thats the only reason I would need it and I didnt have to. It could make it more accessible for people that may not know how to share files other ways too.
I was gifted a Macbook Pro a little while back. It’s not something I would ever choose to buy myself, but since it was free and I can boot it into Windows, Mac OS, and Lunix, I’m greatful to have it. Anyway, it ONLY has USB-C ports and nothing else. Even the power is one of the few USB-C ports. That means when I have to find a drive to transfer any media, it also needs to be USB-C or I will need to find an adapter as well. For example, I currently need to transfer media to my server from that Mac, I only have 2 USB-A drives that may not work, no adapter, and no idea where the extra drives/adapters are since I just moved. I really dont want to set up a shared connection with file sharing enabled between it and my server since I use the laptop for daily use, and I definitely dont want to connect my phone to it physically as a drive. Just being safe.
The reason I am sharing all that is to hopefully illustrate some actual real world reasons as to how it could be helpful…at least for me. However, if a nerd like me with computer crap everywhere has this “issue”, then I bet people with a much much lower probability of finding a SATA cable clogging the vacuum when cleaning the couch, could as well.
I do know that I am not a security expert, though, so I could see there being issues with implementing that, to be concerned avout. That is why I’m thinking LAN only and maybe sending it in some kind of compressed format like a Zip file to be sandboxed awaiting approval of it on the other end with a password once the DL is finished. It could let you name it if needed, choose the libraries, collections, tags etc all while you send the file/s and the plex server can know what it is as the DL is in progress and get a head start on the meta data if so desired.
Ok that’s it, I figured it couldn’t hurt to at least bring it up and maye plant a seed. Maybe someone who can do something about it will see it and agree or maybe just find out that what I want doesn’t really mesh with everyone else…again :vulcan_salute:t5:

Sometimes I buy music and videos from random sites, and I’d like to just upload them to my library via PLEXweb.

I know I could setup FTP or SSH or RDP or whatever, but it would be very easy to do via the Plex Web app.

I just bought an MP3 from bandcamp at work. Its on my work laptop. Now, I’ll have to wait until I get home, then copy it over RDP from my home wifi. I would prefer to just go to the PlexWeb app that I already have open and upload it to my server.

PLEEEEEEEEEASE!?!?!

This kind of thing is really outside the purvue of Plex. Managing your file system is really up to you and your software of choice.

A very easy solution to this for your needs would be any number of syncing services such as Dropbox.

  • Add file(s) to Dropbox from whatever device you are on
  • Add Dropbox folder to whichever Plex library you want it included in (ie Music)
  • Done

This should be a feature of plex web. Synching is a bad method as you need to maintain multiple copies of the data for each user that wants to upload. Imagine if you will that you set up onedrive/dropbox synching for film library… I have almost 10 Tb of films on my server… I don’t want a user to have to connect and sync 10Tb of films just to upload one film to the library. Just add the ability to use WebDAV for SMB shares and then the user can simply upload in the background to the share via html

This would be extremely handy feature.

This could be done with a “File Upload” option in the library.51%20AM

Similar to the poster upload feature.
