Use EPG metadata instead of thetvdb for recording?

There are matching problems with most PBS Kids shows because they double-up the episodes when broadcast. For example, WordWorld s2e9 in the guide is listed as “The Best Nest; Duck’s Family Reunion” but this is listed as episodes 18 & 19 in thetvdb so after recording Plex lists it as “Mmm-Mmm Milk” (episode 9 according to thetvdb). Would there be a way to use the guide metadata instead of thetvdb? What happens when there are no season or episode numbers like with NFL Football?

I agree, sports programs seem to have the same issue. They show up as “Episode 11-13” (since it was recorded on 11/13) rather than showing who actually played the game :frowning: Makes it hard to figure out which one to watch.

This is a problem with other programming as well. I had posted much earlier about how a nova program was initially the correct program season and episode and I saw the episode and its metadata suddenly change. I suspect now that I saw it change since the tvdb info was swapped out for the EPG data. There are many other instances, not just PBS programs, wherein the episode and therefore the metadata is wrong.

This is strange, the file name is “American Experience (1988) - S28E02 - The Battle of Chosin.ts”, which is likely from the Gracenote data. However, in the TVDB S28E02 is “The Mine Wars”, which used in the PLEX DVR and so it is listed as The Mine Wars" and finally in Wikipedia it is listed as S28E08. Who is right and who should Plex use for TV episode data?

I setup a separate library for Cartoons and just save them there with “Personal Media Shows” as the agent. It doesn’t match with any information on TVDB that way and retains the EPG metadata. I then just manually add posters, show information, etc. at a show and season level. Then I don’t have to mess with the episode information. Try that for cartoons. Otherwise you can try to sort by the DVDOrder, but some of those shows aren’t all setup for that. It is easiest in my opinion to retain the EPG metadata and keep that only.

Thanks, that’s a good idea for kids shows. However, the Late Show With Stephen Colbert seems to be one episode off (EPG episode number is one behind of thetvdb) which is pretty annoying. Hopefully Plex will start using the EPG metadata instead of us having to special-case a bunch of shows.

I vote for this as well, my wife likes to watch “Harry” (the harry connick jr talkshow) but it’s not even on theTVDB so it’s definitely all wonky even though the EPG data in the program guide has all the information. Would definitely like to see an option (preferably default) to use EPG guide data in the naming and metadata.

An option to just use guide metadata (gracenote) and turn off internet metadata on a per library or per recording basis would be good.

Late to the party, but hopefully arriving with good news. Apologies in advance for duplicate replies. I see there are several threads asking the same thing and want to make sure they see the same thing.

In the DVR settings you’ll find an option to enable Enhanced Program Guide. It uses TVDB when that feature is enabled. Try turning it off, as then it should use EPG.

@kinoCharlino This does not seem to be the case (tried v1.10.0.4523). I just recorded Dinosaur Train on PBS, s2E11 which in the guide is “Hurricane at Pteronadon Terrace; Rafting the Cretaceous” but shows in the Plex library after recording as “Buddy Explores the Tyrannosaurs”. The “Enhanced Program Guide” feature is disabled and has been disabled all along.

I’m glad I’m not the only one having problem with PBS Kids recordings. I’ve currently got 72 episodes of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and 86 episodes of Dinosaur Train that I need to go through and manually rename so the episode metadata will pull down correctly from thetvdb.

i see these same issues with enhanced program guide both enabled and disabled, particularly for PBS shows. it’s not for every season… only some are off.

@kinoCharlino Is this going to be fixed? Try any PBS kids show and you can see that the guide data is never used - always thetvdb. The Enhanced Program Guide setting has no effect.

@kinoCharlino Still nothing??

@kinoCharlino the solution you put forward doesn’t seem to do anything :frowning: Any other suggestions?

Chiming in as another person with this issue.

This issue affects “Ready, Jet, Go!”, “Curious George”, “Paw Patrol”, “Dinosaur Train” and pretty much anything else that is in the format of 2 11-minute segments per 22-minute broadcast. The TV guide accurately identifies the broadcast, but because TheTVDB insists on their “each segment is an episode” authoritarianism, everything gets screwed up in Plex. Occasionally TheMovieDB will have an episode list that follows the broadcast information, but sometimes not.

Is there any way to pull in the information from Wikipedia? For example, this listing correctly follows the way that the show is broadcast:

Has this been addressed yet?

I guess not. Will the upcoming change in guide data source affect (fix) this?
