Can there at least be an automatic filter for swear words that doesn’t require manual review?
It is allowed. If you find the way it is used not to be reasonable please report it.
from https://www.plex.tv/about/community-guidelines/
Profanity is allowed, but keep it reasonable. Every other word doesn’t have to be an expletive.
So, I’m allowed to write a review for “Bluey” with profanity? Isn’t reporting it after the fact a bit late in that case? I don’t think many parents would be all too happy about it popping up for their kids to read.
You might be surprised to learn Bluey’s target audience doesn’t read TV show reviews.
The auto moderation won’t catch it because what I said. If people flag it then it will go to queue and whomever is doing the queue will reject that on a kids show/movie unless there is some reason I cannot think of.
Managed accounts, which are generally used for kids, cannot see reviews at all.
So a TV program or movie can be filtered by age\content for advertised parental controls, but the content of the reviews for that same program are not. The “reviews” are treated as social network with little to no enforcement separate from the content the social network is directly linked? I get that it’d be hard to moderate.
I think the directive may be best documented as: “reviews are not moderated and may not line up with the content ratings of the titles being reviewed or parental control restrictions. The recommendation from Plex for users concerned about content in reviews is to disable reviews.”
Edit:
Ah. There’s the constructive response to the concern. I didn’t know managed accounts couldn’t see any reviews (and I’m a very long time user, just hadn’t used managed accounts). That seems fair as a solution, but maybe more documentation around these things in a “parental controls” area might be helpful for future concerns?
Edit2:
@Kilgry Really I was thrilled when Plex let me turn off all reviews. I don’t have any content on my server I didn’t put there myself so I didn’t need reviews from others and was happy that part is turned off - maybe that’d be an easier solution if you don’t really need the reviews and don’t wanna bother with a managed account?
that is reasonable to me. I will pass it along
The problem is that managed accounts cannot access remote servers. I have several families with kids accessing my server. I have them create accounts for their kids so I can invite them and then restrict content.
I get you can turn off the reviews, and am glad it is possible, but I was completely caught off guard by the swearing allowance.
I enjoy many of the reviews (usually just the star ratings).
I guess my only option is to turn reviews off, like so many things on Plex, and tell my users to do the same.
Would be nice to be able to tell my users to turn ON features instead.
A completely unnecessary post.
I’ve passed it along to see if the auto moderation can be more strict on things rated for children ( G, PG etc) but can’t make any promises.
Thank you!
I’m all for using profanity both online and offline, but for a film or tv show review on Plex? Totally not necessary and kids will see it often when loading up a film/show
Plex forces people to see reviews, it’s not optional
Managed accounts are useless for a lot of people, they cannot access remote shares
It’s not just swearing… it’s a prime vector for groomers to target kids’ media and offer “free candy” if they hop on kik or whatever.
As discussed above, ensure your children are using the appropriate managed accounts which do not see these reviews at all.
As discussed, remote kids cannot use managed accounts to access servers.
Many families don’t have the IT knowledge to run servers but several of us admins are happy to assist our family friends and their kids.
I am very glad the reviews can be turned off, just be sure to keep these, and things like them, behind login confirmations so the kids can’t enable them again.
Edit: my parent friends keep the logins secret and turn off all discover options. This creates a very safe environment for the kids along with my content restrictions setup as requested by the parents.
