Users and Restrictions on directories

so i have “Movies” category
in this folder (or should i say category?) there are sub folders for other type of movies. eg:

Movies
– Rated R
– Rated PG
etc…
etc…

I want to add a user, but only give them access to Rated PG which is inside Movies, but i can only give access to the entire Movies collection. i really did not want to split them up because that means i would have to add separate moivie albums which would add clutter to the left Nav panel UI.

there should be an option to click on Movies and then individual sub folders you want to give access to. is there a better way to do this without splitting up my library structure?

If such a level of access control is desired, you can either control a managed user (Plex Home) by what rating levels the user can see or if you are sharing with other Plex users, it would be best to create separate Libraries (which is easy to do given you have a really good structure).

For the PG movies library, create the library with Movies/Rated PG as the top.
For the R movies library, create it with Movies/Rated R as the top.

Now you can share on a per-library basis and grant access to the appropriate ones without needing a Plex Home active.

The misnamed “Restrictions” for each user, and then the “Sharing” option for each media item can do the same thing.

No need to do 3+ libraries… One library and just set the sharing labels to match what the rating is. And make sure the user has the rates at or below the rating levels you want them to see added to their “restrictions”. (Notice you are ADDING them and not “restricting” them from seeing the label. Don’t set it to “X” and expect them to not see “X” rated shows… If this is what you set that is ALL they will see!)

Setting sharing “restrictions” works for even “friends” not just “Managed Users” if you are a Plex Pass member.

EDIT: This is how I have my library done now. At one point I had a “Kids” library and an “Adults” and decided it was too much of a PITA to keep up with. (After 2000 or so movies.)

Thanks for speaking up. Great way to do it.
