I have a Roku3 media player. I use it all the time for Netflix and it works great
I have a 70MEG connection into my home so my speeds are fast, it is hard-wired with CAT6 cable and not wireless
My movies are stored on a Synology DS412 NAS
When I launch Plex on my Roku it opens and shows me all my movies. However when I click on them, they either do not start at all (I will go to either 13% or 44% and they will freeze) or they start to play and stop and get choppy through the entire movie. But then I turn on my Netflix and it works without fail and not choppy. I do not think it is my internet speeds at all or that would be choppy as well.
No idea if it is my Roku? My NAS? Or Plex? And I am not sure where to start trouble shooting.
How are you using the Roku3 in this scenario? Are you away from home, using some other internet connection to access your server at home? Are you hard wired or via wifi? Please describe the connection architecture & use-case. With this info, we can start the diagnosis process.
It is a wired 70 meg connection
I am home in my house.
I have the Roku in my bedroom attached to my TV, I am starting it, launching Plex, viewing my movies and selecting one.
Then as I said in the original post it either freeze’s while loading at some % or another, or it plays then freezes, then plays then freezes.
Thanks. Now I understand better how you’re configured.
The speed of your ISP connection doesn’t matter in this case because this is all ‘at home’ where your PMS server is also located. Let’s set it aside.
Now it’s important to know if the Roku is wired to your home LAN, and hence your Plex server, or if both communicate using Wifi.
This is important because starting & stopping is known as buffering. It occurs for two reasons: 1) The connection between the Roku and the server isn’t fast enough to keep up with the video demand or 2) the video itself isn’t 100% compatible and Plex must transcode (convert) the video into a format which the Roku 3 will accept.
With these two possibilities:
While not likely the case, if Wifi is being used; what is it’s speed? 2.4 Ghz G or N, or 5 Ghz N ?
What is most likely is the source audio and or video needs to be processed. The stuttering you’re seeing is because the processor of the DS412 isn’t fast enough to keep up with real-time demand. This is easy to check.
What you’re looking for is, if you see the Plex share in FileStation is Library-Application Support-Plex Media Server-Logs
Grab the Logs which are there, zip them up (multi-select and right-click to create the zip) and then attach the zip file here to your next post.
I will take a look at what Plex is seeing. We can then compare it to the Media Info you see and determine what the exact issue is and how to resolve it for this and future files.
As far as I can tell that NAS has a Intel Atom D2700 @ 2.13GHz processor which has a Passmark of only 849. If that info is correct and your videos require much in the way of transcoding then that is your problem.
From the Plex CPU page:
Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark scores are a good guideline for a requirement:
I should start off by saying this used to work, this Roku, This TV and this NAS, about a year ago. But I stopped using the Roku, when I moved it was put in a box and I thought I lost it. I recently found it and now as I am getting back into using it I am having this issue. But I used to be able to watch movies with it, off my NAS no problem… All updates (firmware/software) are up to date.
Roku and NAS are both hard wired, they do not run off my wifi.
NAS has a CPU Clock Rate of 1.7 and 1 GIG of RAM
I only found one file, I have attached it, no idea if it is the one you are looking for or not.
I guess movies now a days (a year later from the last time it worked) are bigger and more intensive… Maybe that is the problem, I do not have enough juice to run them… Well that really sucks…
If properly encoded, the D2700 processor in the Synology can “sling bits” more than fast enough to keep up. The DS1813+ can push 58 Mbps UHD without any trouble.
So let’s take a look at the metadata for a video giving you problems and figure out the easiest and best way to deal with it (and all others)
The log I saw was from windows and only a partial. It did not show the information needed. Please show the full log from the server PMS is running on and serving to the Roku.
