My plex server runs on a PC, because it makes disk space easier to handle (i.e. for the plex cache), but it doesn’t have any hardware transcoding option, so any transcode makes it fans spin up.
I have an nvidia shield pro 2019 that can run plex server and do transcoding. However, it can’t really handle the storage requirements of my archive without at least adding a hard drive to it just for cache, which doesn’t quite fit with where its physically located.
so I’m wondering out loud if there’s a way for my PC plex server to either leverage the nvidia shield for transcoding purposes, or perhaps more uniquey, enable one plex server to server as simply a proxy for another plex server. i.e. it won’t actually store anything, it will just proxy all metadata type operations to its “parent” server, but it could enable transcoding functionality that is not on the parent server.
just thinking out loud, as it improve my plex server setup if it could leverage the shield.
all metadata operations are passed directly through, playback is done via direct play (stream?) to plex proxy server and proxy can then do its thing to perhaps transcode on demand to actual watcher.
