I have some questions what I can’t find it on the plex forum.
I use plex since 1 years ago and I don’t get too much in details about devices and servers. I’m more an beginner
Now I use to stream my content from an raspberry pi 4 with an 4 TB hdd. Is running 24/7 with plex server on it. Problem what I get from rpi is with transcoding 4k movies. Normally I use direct play but sometimes internet connection is bad and if I must use transcode… I create this server because of the power consumption. Maximum 15w/h.
In the future I will buy an nvidia shield tv pro plus an external ssd to use the plex server.
My questions are next ones :
How many 4k transcode can be handled over external connections?
Is there any option in case that shield remain without power or need an restart to start automatically plex server in background?
I use it with an internet connection of 1 gb and is there any way to get access over the internet to android on nvidia in case of some failure?
Or is better to use an older Dell laptop with i5 and 4gb ram. Open media vault + Portainer and so on. But the power consumption will be bigger.
I need lower consumption because all the home is powered over solar panels and batteries. That’s why is very important to have the lowest one
Thanks for answers and sorry for my english if I made some mistakes
Using a Shield won’t change your network… so when it comes to 4K transcodes over external connections – this wills till be limited by your network setup and internet upload speed.
As for the Shield’s capability to hw-transcode media, you might want to read up on this support article
Plex has no means to restart your server remotely while it’s off power. Keep in mind… if your server is off, Plex has no means to do anything on that machine.
As for opening the underlying Android for remote configuration/administration, you’ll probably need to ask that question on a Nvidia forum – not sure users here will have that answer.
Running your server on a Shield has its limitations. Going with a dedicated machine will give you more flexibility. Certainly it’s possible to get a super low-power setup. I suppose that’ll require some more investigation and tailoring of such a setup.
As for the torrenting… please stick with the forum guidelines and refrain from discussing this here.
Ok. Sorry for wrong questions.
About power off or nvidia restart. I was asking if nvidia shield is remain without power for a few minutes, when starts back the plex server will run directly or must manually open plex app to work again?
Sometimes I watch movie on tablet or phone over celular data. How many transcoding can handle in reality life the shild tv? I read that article and it says that can transcode 2-3 movies on the same time. It not says from what resolutions can be converted. Can handle 2 movie from 4k 25fps to 1080 or lower resolutions?
The speed of internet where is installed nvidia shield will always be 1gb download and 1 gb upload. Optical fiber at home. Is not an issue this problem.
