Apologies if this has been asked before (would be surprised if it wasn’t asked at least yearly) or if there is a way to do this already (5 minutes of searching concluded nothing)…
Can Libraries in Plex be configured to support wildcard directories? This would significantly help in my library automation, and there are a multitude of use cases for others. For my specific needs, the function would be as follows…
The following given directories exist, within each are movies / tv shows relevant to the parent directory.
\\NASSERVER\Video\#Expanded Universe\Star Wars\Movies\
\\NASSERVER\Video\#Expanded Universe\Star Wars\TV Shows\
\\NASSERVER\Video\#Expanded Universe\Star Trek\Movies\
\\NASSERVER\Video\#Expanded Universe\Star Trek\TV Shows\
\\NASSERVER\Video\#Expanded Universe\Marvel Cinematic Universe\Movies\
\\NASSERVER\Video\#Expanded Universe\Marvel Cinematic Universe\TV Shows\
Instead of requiring putting in this path for every unique parent directory, I’d like to be able to enter the paths in simply as…
\\NASSERVER\Video\#Expanded Universe\*\Movies\
\\NASSERVER\Video\#Expanded Universe\*\TV Shows\
This would allow me to maintain the inclusive directory structure and organization, while no longer requiring a manual add for each newly added sub-directory. Even changing the folder structure to be like…
\\NASSERVER\Video\Movies\#Expanded Universe\Star Trek\
\\NASSERVER\Video\TV Shows\#Expanded Universe\Star Trek\
…I would still have this same request, and would use it as such…
\\NASSERVER\Video\Movies\#Expanded Universe\*\
\\NASSERVER\Video\TV Shows\#Expanded Universe\*\
Now, this is fairly minor, as most media can be grouped in a collection (still separated by Movies and TV Shows) and for the examples above, it’ll only help reduce 80 folder paths to 2 folder paths…when I apply the same request to my Anime collection (where collection grouping is significantly more important and cross between Movies / TV Shows is an absolute need)…we see something like this…
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\Dragon Ball\Movie\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\Dragon Ball\TV Series\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\Dragon Ball\OVA\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\Dragon Ball\TV Special\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\Dragon Ball\Web\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\Dragon Ball\Other\
Which would be reduced to
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\*\Movie\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\*\TV Series\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\*\OVA\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\*\TV Special\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\*\Web\
\\NASSERVER\Video\Anime\#Expanded Universe\*\Other\
In this situation…the reduced number of folder paths would be from hundreds!
I understand this would be extra taxing for the agent…but modern machines are more than capable of handling the extra processing. And if it’s measurably worse, simple add an Advanced settings toggle function to allow the use of wild cards, giving users a warning about the extra processing requirements…but still allowing those with sufficient systems to take advantage of such a function.
Please let me know if I can provide any more details to help facilitate this feature request! Thanks!!
Mod-Edit: added some code tags to your post to better distinguish your paths and include the *.
