Various Artist names information suddenly missing from my database

I just opened up Plexamp this evening to suddenly find most of my various artists compilations (I have over 700) have suddenly lost the majority of their artist name information on the individual tracks. A lot of these compilation albums have completely lost all artists names on their tracks, while some compilations have a few random artist names still remaining on some of the tracks.

I’m not exactly sure when this will have happened, but no more than a few weeks ago. My collection is very well organized and almost all of my collection is fully tagged with Musicbrainz Picard.

I have noticed that there are still around a dozen compilation albums which still have all of their artist name information listed for each of the tracks. But these intact albums are all unofficial compilations which don’t exist on the Musicbrainz database. There is also a new compilation album which I just submitted to Musicbrainz around a week ago which also still has the full name information for all artists. But I’m guessing this is because Plex hasn’t yet scrapped this new information from the Musicbrainz server. It typically seems to take a few weeks for my new Musicbrainz submissions to be brought onto the Plex database.

Is there currently some kind of corruption to Plex’s scrapped version of the Musicbrainz database for compilation albums? I’ve always had ‘prefer local metadata’ deselected on my import options as I’d prefer to receive any database improvements over time. But I’m now currently left with nearly all of these artist names being suddenly wiped out!

What can be done to fix this issue, please? I’ve attempted to delete a few of the albums from my Plex collection and then re-import them, but they came back in the same state, all or most of the artists names remain missing. I can confirm that my local audio files are all still fully tagged and the Musicbrainz pages for any of these releases are all still correctly listed.

Hmm, that is not expected  Just to confirm you’re using Plex Music agent without “prefer local metadata” selected, right?

Anyone else seeing this?

Yes, that is correct. I’m using ‘Plex Music’ agent and ‘prefer local metadata’ is not selected.

I so far haven’t noticed any issues with regular ‘artist’ type albums. This issue appears to be just affecting ‘various artists’ type albums which are matched up against the Musicbrainz database.

Actually, we can reproduce. Almost certainly a cloud issue on our side, which will be resolved by refreshing metadata (or letting it refresh automatically over time) once the issue is fixed. Thanks for reporting it!

Great! Thanks for the quick reply. I did attempt to refresh metadata on some of these albums, but this wasn’t working for me. I’m guessing it will take a little while for the fixes to go live?

First we have to find and fix the bug

Understood. I’m a little too keen to see the issue fixed! Great work on Plexamp though. I love it and use it all the time. Thanks for continuing to improve such an already refined product. Keep up the good work.

thanks so much!

Came here to post about this problem too. Started about a week ago for me.

These are album artist “Various Artist” albums that I know where correct. I match all uploads to picard before uploading and it’s changed all compilations including those I uploaded almost a year ago. I just tried to ‘fix match’ and it made no difference. So glad it’s not just a me problem.

Let me know if you need me to provide any more info to help you fix it.

Hi @elan, did you manage to fix this your side? Is there anything I need to do to get back my track artists?

This still doesn’t appear to be fixed. An update as to the progress of tracking down this issue would be appreciated…

Starting to see this bug too - some tracks still show the correct artist though - is there any info we can provide to help find the bug?

@jimbob100101 Are the artists you’re seeing that are still correct all compound artists (as in ‘and’, ‘feat’, ‘&’, etc…) I made that observation and it’s really weird, because it implies that Plex is (now) doing some parsing of multi-artist tracks and that that’s maybe what’s broken things for the time being…

Actually not all, some are still individual artists for me. There doesn’t appear to be any logic to it

Edit: although does seem to be more ‘feat’ / ‘&’ artists that are still appearing.

Some albums don’t have any artist at all now, not even “various artists”

The issue has been found and resolved, but may take a few days to propagate everywhere. Sorry for the inconvenience everyone!

Excellent! Glad to hear it!

It works. Thanks a lot for your job! Plexamp is an amazing app!

Came here to report that it indeed does seem to be fixed. Thanks @aubrey.wodonga.

I’m currently running a full metadata refresh of my music library and can confirm that all tracks appear to be returning to their correct inputted naming information. Many thanks for the fix.
