Verizon 5G Home Internet Gatway and Remote Access

Server Version#: 1.21.0.3744
Player Version#:??

I just changed internet service providers from Cox to the Verizon 5G gateway. Since changing I have had trouble keeping remote access enabled for more than about 15-20 minutes before it disables automatically. My current setup runs from the Verizon gateway to a Linksys switch to the Synology DS 418 plus where Plex is installed. I have no problem streaming content within my home, but my family is no longer able to stream remotely.

Not sure if this matters, but the other ethernet port on the Verizon gateway has my TP Link deco wifi mesh router plugged in. Could this be interfering with Plex remote access?

Any help would be appreciated. I am a novice at this stuff so please be kind.

Would you mind capturing this happening?

  1. Verify DEBUG logging is enabled in the Server
  2. Restart Plex
  3. Let it sit idle for 4 minutes (for the reachability test to complete)
  4. Download the logs ZIP file
  5. Attach the ZIP here.

Thank you!

On a side note, I think I may have it working. I was able to figure out how to open a port on my Verizon Gateway and I have observed that Plex remote access has not disabled in well over an hour. Please let me know if you see anything troubling in the logs.

Confirmed:

Feb 24, 2022 11:27:29.248 [0x7f37afd10700] DEBUG - PubSub: Got notified of reachability for async identifier 6b3651c9-ec76-4206-9563-1b7ef66cf764: 1 for 75.xx.xx.xx

PMS will poll plex.tv in an hour or two. If it still shows with the :white_check_mark: on the left panel of Plex/web, you’re good

Would you mind detailing exactly how you set this up? I was under the impression that the Verizon 5G, TMobile Home Internet, etc services would result in a double NAT situation making it difficult to establish a reliable remote access server.

Does the Verizon gateway actually have “normal” router settings allowing you to set it to a true bridge mode to your TP Link?

The jury is still out on the reliability. My daughter said the connection dropped again earlier so I still don’t know if I have it figured out yet.

I don’t really know what “normal” router settings or bridge mode mean, but I’ll tell you what I have tried. After logging into the Verizon gateway I went to NAT forwarding and the Virtual Servers. From there I selected “add new” and named it PlexMediaServer and called the external and internal ports both 32400 - 32400. The client was already available on the drop down menu for my synology box so I just selected that and then saved. All of this was done after manually specifying the port on the PMS. Not sure if that is what you were looking for, please let me know if anything is unclear and I can try to explain again.

I almost commented the same thing.

I had that strong impression too, but I’m also seing reports that Verizon ~sometimes gives out real IPv4 addresses. Super surprised.

And these logs look OK.

So my plex remote access continues to go down and I think I caught it happening in the attached logs. Can someone who know about these things take a look and see if they can spot any issues?

Your router is getting a public IP address, but it’s changing very frequently - at least once an hour, and sometimes exactly an hour apart.

Look for the phrase Got public IP in the Plex Media Server.log file.

Plex can’t fix that. Do you have consistently solid signal? I suspect it’s thing VZW does on purpose. You could try asking them if there’s any option to keep the same address.

Sadly, it appears Verizon does not offer a static IP option to residential 5G service.

Sadly I was able to confirm this with a Verizon rep tonight.

Is there any other way for me to share my plex media with family or am I limited to using it only in my local network?
