Enabling Remote Access

Is the connection Indirect?

If so, it is using Plex Relay. The stream is tunneled through a server at plex.tv. It is limited to 2 Mbps (1 Mbps w/o a Plex Pass).

Yes it is indirect - how do I fix that?

The Basics of Remote Access Troubleshooting

  1. Who is your ISP?

  2. What is the make/model of your router?

  3. Go to Settings → Remote Access and try to enable remote access.

Assuming it fails…

  1. Is the public IP address displayed? If so, is it between 100.64.0.0 through 100.127.255.255? If yes, then your system uses CG-NAT addressing. You will need to contact your ISP and see if they can provide a public IP address that supports port forwarding.

  2. Do you see any messages regarding “double NAT”? If yes, then stop. There are two routers in the network. Some reconfiguration will probably be required.

If no CG-NAT and no double NAT…

There are two ways to enable remote access: Automatic via UPnP or Manual Port Forwarding.

If your router does not support UPnP, then you will need to create a Port Forwarding rule to tell the router to forward the packets to your Plex server.

Every router is different. Not all support UPnP, and the exact method to create a port forward rule is different as well.

If you use an ISP provided router, look in their help pages.

If you use your own router, the manual should have the necessary information.

Reply back with the make/model (mentioned above). Others with similar equipment can help with the process.

I’m with Vodadone UK using their pro 2 router with wifi 6E.

I think I’ve got it sorted now by using port forwarding on my router and opening up the default 32400 port. It’s now allowing full 1080p over my 5G connection and isn’t showing as indirect. If anything changes I’ll let you know.

Thanks again for your help I really appreciate it!
