Verizon forcing 720p transcode?

On my Apple TV, if I am connected to my phone’s hotspot, the stream is automatically switching from Direct Play to 2Mb 720p.

So far I’ve learned this much:

  • It only happens when I am connected to my hotspot and using the Enhanced Player for Direct Play
  • I can force close the app and start Direct Play again, no buffering but it always switches after a few minutes
  • If the Enhanced Player is disabled it will Direct Stream without going to a lower quality (Web player behaves the same)
  • I never see this happen on my cable internet with Direct Play

I have the app set to stream at original quality. Server upload speed is 200Mb and hotspot speed stays around 60Mb for the tower I’m on. My first guess was that it might not be getting a secure connection forcing it to a relay server, but that doesn’t explain why Direct Streaming doesn’t suffer once I turn off Enhanced player.
