Version 1.11.0.4666 DVR Crashed Multiple Times

Had another stop- this time there was not a Windows Event Log crash event- it appears Plex just stopped at the end of a recording. I was able to grab the log file before restart as I noticed the GUI was down. It stopped at 11:34PM on 1/5/18. Other logs are attached as well. I also confirmed a Crash folder was not created.

Thanks for the logs. There is no evidence of any crash or any requests being rejected by the server.

The only activity was a local livetv session on the server itself which started at 23:00:08 and scheduled for 33 minutes and 52 seconds - completing at 23:34:00

The GUI was down - are you referring to Plex Web app on the server that was streaming the NBC 7 News ??

Did you try to refresh the screen ? select different items on the Plex Web screen?
And do you know if the Plex Media Server.exe process was still showing in Windows Task Manager as a running process ? or if the Plex icon visible in the System Tray?

If you suspect a crash / lockup, always check the task manager and system tray
And try http://localhost:32400/web in a new browser session on the server

The logs do not show any issue

I was referring to the Plex Web App- when I tried to click on the recording that was shown as completed, the Web App then stated the server was unreachable. I logged onto my Plex server directly and noted that the Plex Server was not showing in the task tray, and was not showing as a running process in Task Manager. Also- the recording mentioned was nowhere to be found.

I have not come across this before where it crashes out and no entry in the event log nor any reference to an attempt to create a crash report

I would expect an Application Error exception to be logged in the windows application event log

You could try to temporarily make some changes to the windows settings as outlined here to see if windows can then capture the crash dump

Just as a follow up- I’ve moved the DVR recording duties back to my NAS based Plex server as it is rock solid in terms of stability. Originally the goal was to move all of the Plex activities to the new server with more CPU, but since it is unstable (service stops, transcoder errors, garbage recordings, no recordings at all), I moved recording duties back. I also installed Plex Service Manager to monitor and restart in case Plex shuts down again. The recording quality seems to be better as well- less garbage in the recordings, less truncated recordings, less transcoder errors.

I’m waiting now to see if the next update makes things any better- the whole reason I went down the Plex DVR path was to try to offload recording conflicts from my TiVo- given the Plex issues that was a failure. (Luckily right now there are fewer things on TV that interest me so there are no conflicts.)

@sa2000 If it helps to paint a picture of what was going on when these things happened, I had just installed Plex on the new W10 server, transcodes were running to re-optimize my movie library, DVR recordings were running, I had VideoRedo running batch operations on the DVR recordings to remove commercials, and VAP running the file moves/batch operations with VideoRedo. The server was running 80-90% CPU most of the time, but had plenty of memory available and low SSD utilization (20-30%).

If you have any questions or need any extra detail I’m happy to provide it.

A problem that gives rise to heap corruption crashes relating to DVR has just been fixed in beta release 1.13.1.5063

Release Notes http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1668974/#Comment_1668974

  • (DVR) Various rare crashes (#7575)

I’ve installed the update. I’ll test it out and see if the problem has been resolved. In the mean time I’ve moved my DVR functionality back to Windows 7 Media Center which hasn’t failed a recording.
